SPRINGBOKS CENTRE JESSE Kriel wonโt be cited for a possible high tackle early in his sideโs Pool B win over Scotland in Marseille last night.
The South African centre tackled Scotland number eight Jack Dempsey early in the game and there appeared to be head contact involved, but the incident was not flagged with referee Angus Gardner by TMO Ben Whitehouse for an official review.
Speaking after the game, Scotland boss Gregor Townsend shared his surprise that there hadnโt been a formal review of the incident.
There had been some speculation that Kriel could be cited for his tackle, but that wonโt be the case.
Itโs understood that Whitehouse did examine the incident during the game but didnโt find clear and obvious illegal head contact. And while the official 36-hour citing window remains open until tomorrow morning, it appears that the citing commissioner hasnโt seen illegal head contact either. Both officials benefit from access to around 15 different camera angles.
Springboks director of rugby Rassie Erasmus said today that it hadnโt been a direct head contact.
โWe are really comfortable. There hasnโt been a citing, Iโm pretty sure there wonโt be a citing,โ said Erasmus.
โIf it isnโt direct head contact, and it wasnโt, it was tackled on the ball and then he moved up after tackling on the ball. Iโve seen a few stills where people just [show] after direct contact to the ball.
โIf you took it a millisecond or a second or two back, youโll see that he clearly tackled on the ball. So weโre very happy with how it was refereed.
โI think Finn Russellโs call [when he was penalised for a no-arms challenge on Kurt-Lee Arendse] was much closer. Unfortunately, he got injured then, I think that deflected a little bit from the action that he did, but we were happy with the decision that was made.
โObviously, thereโs some time to do citings still but Iโll be very surprised for the indirect contact, with first contact on the ball, that there will be anything from that.โ
It means that Kriel should be available for the Springboks against Ireland in their huge Pool B clash in Paris on 23 September.
The South Africans face Romania in their second pool game next weekend but itโs expected that Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber will rotate for that fixture.
Kriel could still play against the Romanians, of course, but if he comes through unscathed, he looks certain to start at outside centre against Ireland.
- This article was updated at 6.39pm to correct the duration of the citing window from 24 hours to 36 hours.
Is that Rassie Erasmus complaining that people are sharing selective footage of an incident to criticise the refereeing decision? Just checking
The only reason he didnt get red was because Dempsey didnt lie down and play injured but as far as i know, thats not a requirement
I have watched it back a few times, at normal speed and the replay a few mins later. To be clear, there is no such thing as legal head contact in a tackle. There can be no doubt that there is direct head contact. To say that it wasnโt is a Bojo level denial of the facts.
How can any sane person review that footage and say there was no head on head contact ?โฆโฆ.are they suggesting that all of those social media pictures are doctored in some wayโฆ.astonishing
Clearly an absurd decision, and a penny for Tom Curryโs thoughts but good news for Ireland, heโs someone we can expose.
We in SA know what Rassie uses the traffic lights for, and itโs certainly not for injuriesโฆ..! And he gets away with itโฆ
@Eddie Cunningham: yeah had to check that Cheetahs 2006, been a long time doing it.
Do you actually think Jacques Niemabar is the actual coach of South Africa?
If we give out enough on twitterโฆ.
What a joke the comments made are obviously from couch players please leave the rugby to the experts and stay on the couchโฆ
