Updated at 4.20pm.
IRISH SPRINTER JASON Smyth has won 100m gold at the Paralympic Athletics European Championships.
Smyth finished first in a time of 10.78, well ahead of Russia’s Artem Loginov (11.16) and Joan Martinez (11.19) in second and third respectively.
Smyth is, of course, the reigning double Paralympic and World champion and world record holder at T13 100m and 200m but now runs in the T12 classification as his eyesight has deteriorated.
Earlier, Heather Jameson took her place in the T37 100m final scheduled for 5.20pm after finishing fifth in the stronger of the two semi-finals.
With the top three qualifying automatically, Jameson’s time of 15.44 was enough to send her through as a fastest runner-up.
Later this evening, John McCarthy will line up for the T51 400m final at 7.17pm.
These should be getting a lot more coverage…we have some of the best paralympians in the world…!
And Smyth as good as an able bodied athlete.
Meth, It’s not a great achievement, too many divisions and within divisions athletes with clearly very different abilities.
Thanks for the astoundingly ignorant input Joe!
Meth? Is that what you’re on?
His times are up there with any able bodied Irish sprinter. He is literally the Usain Bolt of the Paralympic world. Well done !!
Wonder if he’s far off the irish 100m fastest time paralympic or otherwise?
Irish record is 10.18, Smyth ‘s best is 10.22 (ran it 3 years ago) and he ran 10.78 today.
I did not see that win coming for Smith
Colm
Dreadful comment to make.
You’re obviously holding up the counter in your local pub!
Just a bit of light hearted fun Michael, relax. Jason is a credit to Ireland and a national icon, I doubt he’d gaf about a pun on The Score
Don’t fall off that stool Colm.
Don’t fall off that high horse Michael
Why didn’t you say it first time round Colm.
Very brave having fun at someone else’s expense!
Well it’s not as if he’s gonna see it?! Okay, I’m going to stop now. These aren’t punny
Well done!
It’s a great achievement
There’s no way I could run the 100 metres in that time plus if I attempted any running I’d be in bits!!!
Allison, it’s fairly safe to say that indeed anyone who would be ‘in bits’ attempting any running would not be able to run the 100 metres in that time.
Congratulations on correctly not putting yourself in the same category as a world gold medalist, Paralympic champion and Olympian on this one. Your modesty is not misplaced. Although perhaps a little patronising.
Get a life you idiot. I was actually trying to complement him, not insult him like other people on here.
You’re the patronising idiot
It would be unrealistic for any woman to expect to be able to run 10.78 without any training Allison. The women’s Irish record is 11.40. If you could run 10.78 it would place you joint 12th on the all time fastest list
The balls look alright from that photo
*wa@ker* not *walker* !!!
Great achievement and makes one wonder why we bother our hole sending all these walker athletes to compete in the ‘able bodies’ games!
Money better spent developing these guys and providing them with all the resources they need to get better, stronger, faster etc!
Well done….all you guys make us proud :-))
He’s brilliant. And a fine figure of a man.
