James McClean was at the centre of controversy again after West Brom's win over Sunderland

It is not the first time the Irish international has been under fire in recent times.

Sky Sports Football / YouTube

JAMES MCCLEAN WAS at the centre of controversy again following West Bromโ€™s 1-0 win over Sunderland today.

McClean, who used to play for Sunderland, had an altercation with Danny Graham before several other players interjected following todayโ€™s Premier League match at the Hawthorns.

The Ireland internationalโ€™s celebrations at the final whistle, fist-pumping following abuse from the away fans, are understood to have prompted the trouble.

It is not the first time that the former Derry City winger has been the subject of controversy, with McClean coming under fire in July for appearing to turn his back on the English national anthem.

West Brom manager Tony Pulis was also reportedly less than complimentary about his player following the incident, with BBC reporter Ivan Gaskell quoting the manager suggesting McClean was โ€œnot the sharpest tool in the boxโ€.

Sunderland fans giving him dogs abuse all day and then cry foul when he gives them an oul fist pump? Football fans have grown fairly sensitive!

McClean got dogs abuse from his own fans after the first poppy incident. These are the same supporters who spat on Peter Reid, their manager at the time, after losing a pre season friendly. Theyโ€™re a bunch of Neanderthals up there. McCleanโ€™s entitled to a little pay back with them.

Player celebrates win, losing fans dont like it. Its a complete non-story. If the finger needs to be pointed at anybody its Danny Graham for shoving McClean for no reason

If Danny Graham could score a goal Sunderland wouldnโ€™t be bothered by McClean or his like. Heโ€™s been getting a wage as a footballer for a while now with nothing to back it up.

Read on other sites that he was getting sectarian abuse. All he did was a fist pump in celebration towards them. I find it ridiculous the way soccer fans think they can say what they want to players but when the player reacts their outraged

I donโ€™t see why this is a big deal,if another player did this it would not have made it on to the42. If thereโ€™s any one who would want to cop on itโ€™s Sunderland, 3 points from 9 games.

It made it on the42 because it involves an Irish player, and one that needs to up his game if weโ€™re to qualify. Iโ€™d love to read about him whipping a great ball in for a goal or scoring himself as opposed to this. I donโ€™t give a s*ite about Sunderland.
