Incredible day for Irish rowing: Gold for O'Donovan brothers and bronze for Puspure

Gary and Paul O’Donovan have been crowned European champions in the lightweight men’s double sculls in Germany.

IT’S BEEN A momentous day for Irish rowing at the European Championships in Germany with a gold for Gary and Paul O’Donovan in the lightweight men’s double sculls and a bronze for Sanita Puspure in the women’s single sculls.

The O’Donovan brothers, from Skibbereen in west Cork, had almost two seconds to spare over the second-placed team from Germany, winning in a time of 6.57.760.

The team from Norway, who recorded the fastest times in the heats and in the semi-finals, finished just under a second behind the Germans to claim bronze.

The Irish pair performed excellently in rough conditions, reeling in the leading Norwegians, to claim the win in Brandenburg.

Puspure then added to the Irish elation in Germany with an impressive third-placed finish in the women’s single sculls.

Her time of 9.44.770 was good enough for bronze, just over five seconds behind Elza Gulbe of Latvia and more than 22 seconds behind the runaway winner, Austria’s Magdalena Lobnig.

This is a game where Leinster have got to get 4 tries and score as many pts as possible. Harlequins have Wasps at home, are sure to get 5pts against Castre and have a 23pt advantage. I think Reid is a real threat in attack so I’d pick him at 12. It could be an idea to play Te’o on the wing? No idea what he’s like under a high ball though…

Tries are the only thing that matters, points diff isn’t used as a tie breaker, and head to head means Leinster can’t finish level with Quins now and win the group. But tries scored will matter for seeding, and Leinster are a long way back in that count unfortunately.

Thanks, I did not know that. Still, they need the BP. Fingers crossed Wasps beat Harlequins

Murrary would Jimmy G not be better suited to 12 with madigan inside him at 10 rather than the other way round?

Why would you not pick Ben Te’o, especially against a weakened team? Great opportunity to get some valuable match experience and can score tries too
