Irish men's hockey team suffer late heartbreak

The hosts missed out on Olympic qualification at a packed Belfield today, in the cruelest of circumstances.

Ireland 2-3 Korea

THE IRELAND MEN’S hockey team lost to a crushing last-minute deflected strike at Belfield this afternoon, ending their bid for Olympic qualification in the process.

Ireland lost the game 3-2, having twice led, courtesy of goals from Peter Caruth and Timmy Cockram.

Having secured a necessary draw against Malaysia on Saturday, Ireland came close to toppling a team placed ten positions above them in the world rankings, in a playoff to determine which side would progress to the Olympic Games.

However, as the game looked to be heading for extra time, a fortuitous goal from Nam Young Lee in the final seconds of the game put paid to the hosts’ London 2012 dream.

Ireland Team: David Harte; John Jackson; Geoff McCabe; Ronan Gormley; Michael Watt; John Jermyn; Ian Sloan; Mitch Darling; David Ames; Paul Gleghorne; Stuart Loughrey.
Reserves: Chris Cargo; John Jermyn; Peter Caruth; Andy McConnell; Timmy Cockram.

Ridiculous decision…. why can’t they just choose a first and second place?

Fair call. You have to make a precieved effort to win a triathlon, this was a contrived draw with no competitive finish. Wouldn’t have made a huge difference in this race but rule is there for the ITU series where points are on offer. They should have known the rule.
