Flying the Irish Flag

Today could be the day that Ireland makes it mark at the Olympic Games, with several opportunities for the team to win their first medal in Rio.

Sinéad Lynch and Claire Lambe are first up when they race in the lightweight double sculls final at 2.32pm, with the O’Donovan brothers Paul and Gary competing in the male equivalent at 2.44pm.

Annalise Murphy is hoping to maintain her excellent start in the sailing after yesterday’s rest day. The Dubliner competes in race seven of 10 at 5.05pm, with race eight at 6.30pm. Finn Lynch competes in the male event from 5.15pm.

The Irish hockey team can continue to make history by beating Argentina in their final group match at 11.30pm. A win will see Ireland into the quarter-finals.

Judy Reynolds competes for the first time in the dressage at 2pm Irish time.

It is also the first day of the athletics, with three Irish athletes set to take to the track throughout the day.

Mark English will kick-off the Irish interest when he begins his 800m heat at 2pm, while Alex Wright takes part in the 20km walk from 6pm.

Quite a bit later, Ciara Mageean starts her 1,500m heat at 12.30am.

Ireland’s badminton pair are also in action today. Scott Evans takes on German Marc Zweibler in his first pool match at 3.20pm, while Chloe Magee will be hoping to recover from her opening loss, when she faces another German, Karin Schnaase at 1.05am.

Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern along with Andrea Brewster and Saskie Tidey begin their 49er sailing events at 6.05pm and 6.30pm respectively.

It is the second round of the golf event, with Pádraig Harrington starting the day on one-under par, seven shots behind the runaway leader from the opening round, Australian Marcus Fraser. Ireland’s other representative Séamus Power, is a further stroke back on even-par.
