'If you told us before that we'd get to a quarter-final, we'd have bit your hand off'

Ireland look to go one further this evening as their Hockey World Cup dream continues.

TODAYโ€™S THE DAY.

Irelandโ€™s remarkable journey at the 2018 Womenโ€™s Hockey World Cup continues as they face India in the quarter-final (6pm, live on RTร‰ 2 and BT Sport). Two games away from a place in the World Cup final. Incredible.

Theyโ€™ve sent waves around London over the last two weeks or so but one must not forget that this is their first World Cup appearance in 16 years. Itโ€™s been some story so far.

Graham Shawโ€™s side โ€” ranked 16th in the world โ€” kicked off their campaign with a massive win, a huge upset which saw them stun seventh-ranked United States with a 3-1 victory.

Sitting top of Group B, the Green Army powered into the last eight with a game to spare after recording a sensational win over todayโ€™s opponents India. Anna Oโ€™Flanaganโ€™s early goal was enough to send them through to the knockout stages where they now face a repeat of that clash.

Thereโ€™s been a 1-0 loss to hosts and world number two outfit England since but Ireland still managed to top the group. Thatโ€™s all in the past now anyway. All focus is on today.

โ€œWeโ€™re hungry,โ€ midfielder Roisin Upton told RTร‰ Sport. โ€œI think thatโ€™s the best way to describe it.

โ€œIf youโ€™d told us before the tournament started, โ€˜Youโ€™re going to get to a quarter-final,โ€™ we would have bit your hand off and we would have taken it, but now that weโ€™re here we want to get to the semi-final.

โ€œWeโ€™re so excited (for) tomorrow.โ€

Ireland are the lowest-ranked side of the remaining nations and this is their first-ever Hockey World Cup quarter-final.

โ€œI think weโ€™ve surpassed our expectations so far so itโ€™s about going out and just enjoying ourselves,โ€ Antrim native Zoe Wilson notes.

โ€œWe know thatโ€™s when we play our best hockey. Weโ€™re here to enjoy it.โ€

She adds of India: โ€œThey like a lot of crash balls.

โ€œTheyโ€™re individually very skillful so weโ€™re going to have to really focus on our one v one defending. I think if we can get those two elements right weโ€™re in for a good day.โ€

And goalkeeper hero Ayeisha McFerran echoes Wilsonโ€™s sentiments:

โ€œWeโ€™re confident in ourselves and we know that if we stick to what we can do, keep moving the ball and use our strength, weโ€™ll do fairly well with that.โ€

India will come into this eveningโ€™s clash smelling blood, it must be said. Theyโ€™re well and truly seeking revenge. They witnessed Ireland as giant-killers first hand, and have had an erratic campaign themselves. They drew 1-1 with both England and the US on top of that loss to the Girls in Green, but turned their fortunes around in the play-off against Italy.

They clocked their first win of the tournament, doing so in emphatic fashion on Tuesday evening as they sailed out 3-0 winners. Peaking at the right time.

Ireland wonโ€™t mind that though. Theyโ€™ll focus on themselves and hope to continue making their mark on history how they know best โ€” by simply enjoying their hockey.

โ€œWho is to say we canโ€™t go the whole way?โ€ assistant coach Arlene Boyles asked RTร‰โ€™s Declan Whooley. โ€We have gone over and beyond where we thought we possibly could if we are being honest. Now that we are here, we are thinking, โ€˜Wow, what an opportunityโ€™โ€.

โ€œThe group of girls we have here, they want to make history. They want to be role models. They want to let people know how important this is to them. I think they are showing that in the way they play and in the way they conduct themselves off the pitch.

โ€œThe big thing is now that we are on the big stage, we must stay here. Itโ€™s a great foundation. We canโ€™t let this slip.โ€

This eveningโ€™s winners face Spain in the semi-final after they sprung a shock 1-0 win over Germany last night.

Ogbene and obafemi should our front two going forward. Their pace alone would concern most defences. Their finishing is on par or better than parrott. Parrott very wasteful and over admired by Kenny.

I was a Kenny supporter up to now but after his inexplicable decision to leave Parrott on the pitch and take Obafemi off Iโ€™ve changed my mind.

@Joe Healy: over one subโ€ฆ Ya thats the reason to sack him. Another keyboard warriors fook me they are everywhere tonight. Great display game plan, control, an actual plan to beat the high press. We didnโ€™t convert our chances simple as, Maybe you didnโ€™t see THAT Joe too busy with the boys on the pub.

@Joe Healy: Maybe there was a reason weโ€™re not aware of. Obafemi is not playing at the minute and perhaps had a knock or was out on his feet.

Game wasnโ€™t just lost on the pitch. It was the sidelines too. Ogbene should have started. Inform player scoring goals. Parrot was too wasteful. No goals in the league for Preston.. frustrating display from Ireland.

Can any Kenny Out believer please explain? Youโ€™d swear he was underachieving with this group of players the way they go on and we have defined right to get a result last night. Scotland are a better team with players at a higher level than us. We were always underdogs last night. Itโ€™s the worst crop of players Iโ€™ve ever seen, but it is the most enjoyable Iโ€™ve seen an Ireland team play since Mick McCarthy 20 years ago. Yes the result was frustrating last night because we deserved something, but by god you couldnโ€™t fault that performance against a superior side to us. So to the Kenny doubters, no other manager would get any more out of this team and leave him in the job.
