Leinster 15 Keenan's influence against Munster shows his growing skillset

The 24-year-old has been encouraged to get involved as a distributor.

HUGO KEENANโ€™S FIRST touch last weekend was exactly the kind of attacking contribution Leinster and Ireland have been encouraging him to make this season.

Both teams want their fullback to be a playmaker and distributor, along with nailing the usual backfield and aerial duties, and 24-year-old Keenan is happy to embrace a little more responsibility.

In this instance, Keenan [white below] sets up off out-half Ross Byrne following a Rรณnan Kelleher linebreak into the Munster 22.

1

As flanker Rhys Ruddock [red below] then runs a hard line to give Byrne a direct front-door option, Keenan bounces out the back.

2

With Ruddockโ€™s convincing run attracting Munsterโ€™s Damian de Allende, Keenanโ€™s run challenges Joey Carbery โ€“ who is initially also worried about Ruddock โ€“ before the Leinster fullback releases centre Rory Oโ€™Loughlin into space.

Leinster have a clear try-scoring chance but Keith Earlsโ€™ excellent defence โ€“ sitting off Oโ€™Loughlin and then feinting to close on him before drifting off again โ€“ contributes towards a real missed opportunity.

Chance

Still, itโ€™s a nice early involvement on the ball for Keenan, who soon shows more nice handling skills wide on the right to give Larmour time on the ball.

Later in the half, Keenanโ€™s support line allows Josh van der Flier to offload to him for a clean linebreak, with the Leinster fullback showing fine awareness and decision-making to find Robbie Henshaw running another strong support line on his right shoulder.

HK

This example also illustrates Keenanโ€™s outstanding work-rate as he gets around the corner having fielded a Munster kick and carried the ball just three phases earlier.

Keenan had several other nice passes in Leinsterโ€™s Guinness Pro14 final win.

The instance below sees him once again offer Byrne a back-door option, this time behind a two-man forward pod, and release a well-timed pass to allow Leinster to threaten up the right-hand side.

Pass

Former Ireland 7s international Keenanโ€™s growing comfort as the second receiver was obvious last weekend and the 24-year-old is happy to be taking some of the burden off the likes of Byrne.

โ€œYeah, definitely trying to help out the 10s and centres as much as possible and organising those forwards. It happened a good bit on the weekend, I just found myself in those positions. Sometimes it just happens, sometimes you are in those positions.

โ€œI enjoy that side of the game. That is one thing Iโ€™d always refer back to my 7s days playing out-half for them. I got comfortable and worked on that a lot of the time in the 7s programme.

โ€œItโ€™s a big thing they drive here in Leinster and Ireland so itโ€™s a good thing to get my hands on the ball as much as possible. Stu [Lancaster] also drives that anyone in the backline should be able to play any position and fill in wherever you can so youโ€™ve got to be comfortable.

โ€œItโ€™s something Iโ€™m still working on and Iโ€™m nowhere near as good as some of the 10s in Leinster who do it.โ€

hugo-keenan-makes-a-break Keenan fires a pass during Leinster's win over Munster. Billy Stickland / INPHO Billy Stickland / INPHO / INPHO

Keenan did initially play at out-half during his school days in Blackrock College, where he wasnโ€™t a star player and was more interested in football with Mount Merrion Youths FC.

He moved into the back three in fifth year and finally โ€œkicked onโ€ in rugby, with an All Blacks fullback as his role model.

โ€œOne guy who I always loved growing up was Ben Smith, the New Zealand fullback,โ€ says Keenan. โ€œHe had a bit of everything didnโ€™t he, that all-round game, so he was always someone I admired.

โ€œI suppose that footballing fullback style that is more linked into Beauden Barrett and you see it more and more. You see Stuart Hogg filling in at 10, Elliott Daly and the likes. Itโ€™s something that if 15s can do it, it adds that extra bit and itโ€™s always a big bonus so Iโ€™m just trying to work on it.โ€

Well instead of paying a premium for 8-9 squad players with low wages why donโ€™t you and the committee start paying top dollar for 2-3 stars that will lift the team and actually win something?
Look at Barcelona 2-6 years ago, the best team ever appearantly. Their bench was barely better than ours is. Infact alot of the time they had kids on it. But their first teamโ€ฆ.. Same with the United team that one 3 in a row. Even Chelsea and man cityโ€™s benches arenโ€™t that great. Meanwhile ourselves and Tottenham have fairly decent benches! But the thing is we only have a fairly decent first 11 aswellโ€ฆ

Ya but Eoin Liverpool can offer United City arsenal Everton Chelsea Spurs each week Celtic can offer motherwell Aberdeen and so on thatโ€™s the difference. People claiming Liverpool are no longer a big have not got a clue. A big club in my eyes is a club that has a massive fan base eg: United Arsenal Madrid Barca and so on. Leeds are still a big club they have a draw towards them. I have never seen so many articles on one club especially on theScore then I have on Liverpool. Itโ€™s Liverpool this Rodgers that , the only club that comes near is United. What about Leicester Hull Man City Chelsea Newcastle and so on ? Reason being they are not massive clubs (no disrespect) but if they were weโ€™d all know more about them because thereโ€™d be articles on them left right and centre.

    @John Hayes:
The reason Liverpool get so much press is because of the amount of interviews Rodgers feels the need to do. If he spent less time talking about how big Liverpool are,and their history he might actually make his own squad good, and make his own history. He loves the sound of his own voice and would rather talk about great players than actually trying to recruit them. Players want to work for successful manager, and play in front of big crowds every week, and Liverpool canโ€™t offer either at the moment.

Thatโ€™s the point I was arguing, I didnโ€™t dispute what he has spent, although itโ€™s a transfer committee that makes the decisions in Liverpool not just Rodgers but he will take the flack for it. Liverpoolโ€™s scouting network also has to be questioned as well as the owners philosophy on buying young potential to nurture rather then proven talent. And when they have tried they didnโ€™t want to go ( Sanchez)

Every day there is something in the press with Rodgers, not just on his Friday pre-match press conference. He is an ego-maniac. He is either having to defend his piss poor signings, his players wanting out,his players behaviour or being rejected by yet another half decent player. With the money he has spent you would think Liverpool would have a team full of superstars, over ยฃ215m since he took over, and who have they got to show for it,not 1 world class player, and for any Liverpool fan to say itโ€™s about money is lies because Suarez was on ยฃ200,000+ a week. Gerrard was one of the first players to earn over ยฃ150,000 in England. He wonโ€™t spend money this window because he isnโ€™t trusted with it,heโ€™ll be gone before the end of the season.

I think the problem for liverpool at rating players is that as a club they have failed to show real ambition like that shown by the Unitedโ€™s, cityโ€™s and Chelseaโ€™s of this world. We sell out biggest players in Suarez, Torres, mascherano and alonso. Failing to sign any recognised star player to replace these sends out a message that were not an ambitious club that wants to compete at the highest level.
As a result its gets to even sign mid range players like shaquiri who could easily be signed if the clubs ambition matched its size. Weโ€™re a big club with modest ambitions at the moment I fear.

Ah Colin. To be fair. He is on sky sports news or quoting to the press nearly every day. Thatโ€™s hardly an obligation in his contract. Heโ€™s on sky sports more than harry rednapp ever was. Thatโ€™s not a dig. Just the truth. As a Liverpool fan told me if his team could defend as good as he defends himself , theyโ€™d be laughing.

The other argument here is about club size and draw for players to join. I am a united fan. I wonโ€™t get into us being big now even though we were in limbo for 26 years at one stage. The difference now is the money. Simple. Itโ€™s about the player and not the club. Sad truths.
I did say one thing last year that hopefully United can weed out the mercenaries out there and get players who want to get United back into the champions league and not just take it as a given. It brings a sense of achievement and togetherness in a team.

Liverpool and United are still the 2 biggest clubs in the world from a fan base point of view. In my opinion, things will change and they will both help each other get back to the top. They have been too fair when it comes to TV rights etc. And if thatโ€™s what football is about with the other big teams mentioned and the players they can attract then it will be short livedโ€ฆ..football should be about the fansโ€ฆ.that way you earn the money on meritโ€ฆ.
