DUBLIN HURLER DAVID Treacy has said that the atmosphere in the Dublin dressing room was good while Ger Cunningham was in charge.
Cunningham stepped down from his role as Dublin hurling manager on Saturday morning, after almost three years in the job.
In a statement released on the Dublin GAA website, it was noted that he was leaving his position by mutual consent.
In the statement, the 1986 Hurler of the Year also addressed rumours of player discontent that came to the fore during his time in charge.
“There has been a lot of speculation about different aspects of Dublin hurling over the last few months,” he noted. “For the record every decision that my backroom team and I made was always in the best interests of Dublin senior hurling.”
And earlier today, speaking on Morning Ireland where he was helping with the draw for the All-Ireland hurling semi-final, sharpshooter Treacy said that the atmosphere in the camp was good under Cunningham and that Dublin hurling is in a good place.
“We might have known (of Cunningham’s resignation) a couple of days before,” he responded, when asked to comment on the departure.
“Ger was always the best of gentlemen on and off the pitch and I personally wanted to take this opportunity to thank him for all he has done.
“I suppose it’s not great looking from the outside in.
“But speaking from the players’ dressing room, the atmosphere was good. And he hasn’t left it in what (the state) people are saying he has.
“Personally I’d like to thank him for his effort and just wish him the best of luck for the future.”
The Cuala man also gave his thoughts on the outcome of this year’s All-Ireland championship on air.
“It’s going to be tight. It’s an amazing championship so far.
“My gut is saying Galway, just having played them. They have a nice mix. The Cooneys are definitely taking the pressure off Joe [Canning] up front to do what he does out on the pitch. Very, very solid at the back.
“But then again — Cork at the moment are riding the crest of a wave and they seem to be playing with this fearlessness with the young players that they have.
“And then Waterford, with two semi-finals last year essentially with the replay, they have something to prove. And Tipp, you cannot discount that forward line.”

Of course the atmosphere was good. All the lads he fell out with were gone
Someone please tell what exactly happened in dublin. Did some players refuse to play for him? I have great respect for cunningham, just thought his squad was’nt good enough.
@The don: Huge amount of players left the squad, he did the best with what he had! Players like Sutcliffe, the Schutte brothers etc have all left, Mark Schutte went to the footballers I think. Very harsh blaming the management when you have such a high turnover of key players

What’s that smell?
The real test of a manager is has he handed over the team in a better place than he got them .I think the answer is obvious.
The pressure is now on the Dublin players to bounce back over the next year or two just like the Galway players have done after ousting their manager, and put their money where their mouths are and win the Lenister championship.
