Nottingham announce signing of 21-year-old out-half from Munster

Gearoid Lyons will play under Ian Costello at the English Championship club next season.

ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP SIDE Nottingham have added another Munster man to their set-up for next season by announcing the signing of Gearoid Lyons.

The 21-year-old out-half, who has represented Munster ‘A’ but never made a senior appearance for the province, will join Jordan Coghlan at Nottingham, who will be led in 2016/17 by current Munster assistant coach Ian Costello.

As well as captaining Crescent College to the Munster Schools Senior Cup in 2013, Limerick native Lyons has represented Ireland at U18 level and was part of the Irish sevens squad in 2015.

“Gearoid is a player we’ve had our eye on for a while and will be a great fit for us here at The Bay,” said Simon Beatham, Nottingham’s Director of Rugby.

“He’s quick, he’s competitive and he’s got bags of potential and I’ve no doubt that he’ll settle in well and start battling for that starting jersey with the other boys.”

Probably looking at Holland, Keatley, Tyler and Scannell ahead of him, not to mention the expectation around Johnston coming and figured it might be years before he gets a chance. This can only be good thing, two players not really getting a look in with Munster and B&I Cup seems a total waste, now they will get lots of exposure in a competitive league. Hopefully it works out and more players strike out from the bubble of the ‘A’ teams. Look at how quickly the likes Darren O’Shea progressed and now returns a better player.

Exactly, disgraceful treatment of someone who has given as much as he can to the Munster set up from a small but noisy group of so called supporters.

I could equally argue that your blind acceptance of mediocrity brings your support of the team into a similar level of doubt. I get frustrated by our nose dive in competitiveness and would like to see an internal acknowledgement that some of our current players are not at the level to get us back to being competitive. My support of the team is not based on how many online avenues I can discount negatives options of players, how much merchandise I buy or how loudly I can shout “C’MON MUNSTER!” at a game. So please don’t question my fandom with the moral high ground of, “supporting the lads through thick and thin”, I do of course do that, but I am also hoping for an end to the thin days at some point and, not questioning his commitment or effort in any way, Ian Keatley is not the out half to guide us back to the top table.

It was an historic balls up by a highly overrated member of the Ulster coaching team who deliberately didnt pick him up. Lets be honest Tyler was another management disaster so why would Munster let locals go? Hope they dont have another Steenson. It says something when Ian Nagle signed for Leinster.

Bit harsh to blame management for Tylers injury record? He was promising kiwi 10 with a big reputation and Munster badly needed a reliable 10, but injuries can happen to anyone at any time (Heaslip aside), how could management have known he would spend 2 seasons crooked? Also still a possibility he could overcome his injury misfortune and prove himself next year.

Well Scannel played the 2nd 5/8 role to pretty good effect this season, and Axel had spoken of playing JJ there. Listen there are a lot of sticks you could beat the current administration with but in my eyes the Tyler issue was misfortune. As for JJ the argument will rage on no doubt, he has had good days and bad for Northampton but hardly pulled up trees and usurped Myler so hard to imagine his absence is why Munster are failing. That said I’d have him back tomorrow.

The English Championship is at least one level below the Pro 12. It is however an excellent league for developing players. Many do make the transition to the English (Aviva) Premiership.
