FORMER LIMERICK CAPTAIN Gavin O’Mahony has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling at the age of 30.
Kilmallock clubman O’Mahony has been involved with the county’s seniors since 2007, and he captained them for the 2011 season.
O’Mahony skippered the county to a Division 2 league title in 2011 was wing-back on the Munster SHC-winning side of 2013. He also was part of the Munster squad that picked up the inter-provincial title in 2013.
In a statement released on Twitter this evening, he said: “Hurling has played a huge part in my life and I feel very fortunate to have had the honour to represent Limerick over the course of my career.
“To all the brilliant teammates, teachers, coaches and managers that I have crossed paths with at underage, schools, colleges and senior leves I offer my genuine thanks, respect and appreciation.
“I would like to take this opportunity to wish the current Liemrick panel the very best for 2018 and for the future. I hope it’s a successful one.”

He signed off with class.A cracking player. He wore green on many a dark, desolate day for Limerick hurling (we’ve had too far many of those!), including the 2009 All-Ireland semifinal savaging by Tipp, a defeat which led to virtually the entire panel either being jettisoned by Justin McCarthy or refusing to play for that manager in 2010. Awful, awful times.
It was wonderful, therefore, to see O’Mahony win a Munster medal in 2013 at the Gaelic Grounds on a magical, heatwave-blessed day. It might have gotten better for him in 2014, as one of his best days in green came in that year’s semifinal, played out in a monsoon against Kilkenny. In that game Limerick gave possibly their best ever championship display but still couldn’t down the irrepresible Cats. Thanks for the memories, Mr O’Mahony.
