Conor McGregor en route to victory against Dennis Siver. Emily Harney/INPHO

One of McGregor's featherweight rivals doesn't fancy the Dubliner's chances against Aldo

“Conor has never met anyone as strong as Aldo.”

FRANKIE EDGAR IS hoping that a win over Urijah Faber this weekend in Manila will set him up for a UFC featherweight title shot against the winner of this summer’s meeting of Conor McGregor and defending champion Jose Aldo.

Edgar, a former UFC lightweight champion, is currently second in the UFC’s featherweight rankings — one place ahead of McGregor — and the 33-year-old American is keen on a rematch with Aldo, having lost to him in 2013.

“Conor has never met anyone as strong as Aldo,” Edgar told The Daily Star, when asked for a prediction for the UFC 189 main event, which takes place in Las Vegas on 11 July.

“I’m going to go with the champ in this one. But good luck to McGregor. He got the fight. He’s beaten people in devastating fashion and he’s got this fight and that’s all that matters. Whether he deserves it or not, that’s in the past. He has it on 11 July. It’s what he does with it that counts.”

Edgar added: “I want the belt. Aldo has beaten me before and I’d like to be the one to take the belt from him.”

Oh right the old “can’t comment unless you’ve played at the highest level” crap? Easy to throw that out when you don’t like what u hear…

Hi Alex, I never said they weren’t entitled to their opinions, but I thought they were unnecessarily harsh, especially the ‘#notgoodenough’ …..the team is representing our country and giving it their best shot in difficult circumstances. Remember these guys haven’t played together before this tournament and while some of their play was rushed and error ridden, there were some nice phases of play too.
I for one am happy with their efforts. Best of luck to the U20′s tomorrow night.

They really should have won that. All the possession. Sloppy passes, and panicking everytime they got the ball instead of being patient and going through some fazes,

none of those Ireland players are going to go onto be major talents, the only guy there that has great potential is Jack McGrath. Guys like Noel Reid have spent far too long on the Leinster A team – while that South African line up is way more talented … goes to show how much more choice they have at every position – they simply have a way bigger factory of players.

That’s the thing! The pool of talent there compared to here is much bigger! We don’t have outstanding players coming through
