FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR says he thinks a fight against UFC star Conor McGregor will “absolutely” happen.
A bout between the undefeated, five-division world champion, who retired in September, and McGregor, one of the biggest names in mixed martial arts, would be a guaranteed – if unorthodox – box office drawcard.
And Mayweather has now given the strongest indication yet that he is seriously considering the proposed cross-over event.
“Well, it’s really not a rumour,” he told Showcase. ”The fight may happen. We really don’t know as of right now. But do I think the fight will happen? Absolutely.”
As for the rules of any potential showdown, Mayweather, the proud owner of a 49-0 record, 26 by knockout, indicated he wants to fight on his terms.
“It has to be a boxing match because … most fights Conor McGregor won in the octagon, he was a stand-up guy,” he said.
“I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a tough fight for me. We really don’t know as of right now, but it’s been a lot of talk and hopefully we can make the fight happen.”
The comments came a day after UFC president Dana White talked down the chances of a fight between the pair.
