THE FAI HAVE been fined 5k because of the use of a logo to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising, FIFA have today confirmed.
The Boys in Green wore the emblem on their jerseys during the friendly match against Switzerland in March.
“FIFA can today confirm sanctions imposed on several football associations for incidents during 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches and international friendlies,” a statement from football’s world governing body reads.
“[T]he Republic of Ireland has been fined CHF 5,000 for the display of a political symbol on the shirt during the Republic of Ireland v Switzerland friendly match.
“The Disciplinary Committee has taken these decisions after analysing all of the specific circumstances of each case.
“With these decisions, it is not our intention to judge or question specific commemorations as we fully respect the significance of such moments in the respective countries, each one of them with its own history and background. However, keeping in mind that the rules need to be applied in a neutral and fair manner across FIFA’s 211 member associations, the display, among others, of any political or religious symbol is strictly prohibited. In the stadium and on the pitch, there is only room for sport, nothing else,” said the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Claudio Sulser.
England’s FA meanwhile were fined 45,000 Swiss francs for wearing a poppy tribute to British war dead during their 11 November game against Scotland.
Scotland were fined 20,000 Swiss francs, while Wales and Northern Ireland were given 20,000 and 15,000 Swiss franc fines respectively for making their own tributes.
“The Irish FA is disappointed that the FIFA disciplinary committee has reprimanded the association and issued a fine in relation to acts of remembrance at the Northern Ireland v Azerbaijan match on 11th November,” a statement reads.
The Irish FA will examine the full written submission when it is released and will take further legal advice before deciding on a future course of action.”
Send it to them in 1 p coins.
And round it down.
If they want to leave politics out of sport then why is russia and Qatar still going ahead and why do fifa allow politicians to help bring the tournaments to prospective countries.
Show racism the red card is political, isn’t it?
I wonder how much Barcelona will get fined for having UNICEF on their shirts for years and years.
@englishfa snitches get stitches
That’s the English babies fault for being squealers
I’ll gladly donate to a gofundme if the FAI promise to dump it all in 1c coins on their front step with an abusive note
English grassing us up cause of that bloody poppy.
It’s a good job St. Pat’s (Saint Pats? St Pats?) didn’t accept their 5k bonus this year, or the FAI would be struggling to pay this.
The fines are an utter joke anyway. Pay up, say nothing and carry on doing your own thing. Include the fine as an understood cost in future plans of this nature.
Not like it will be every year that it’s done, pay the fine and move on.
Don’t pay the fine and let FIFA jog on.
Pay it weakly €20 per week…..just like the grant to the clubs
We signed up to these rules so can’t complain, the token fine is only because it was flagged by the various British FA’s blatant use of “what about them!”
In the stadium and on the pitch, there is only room for sport, nothing else,” said the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Claudio Sulser.
but sponsorship and advertising is all good
3 Ireland could start a shell company called “1916″ and sponsor the team
Jealous Brit’s grassed us up
Just don’t pay it simple as
Won’t hurt John Delaney’s pocket!
Irish FA will “take further advice”… That will cost more than the fine for starters. Make a decision and either pay or don’t pay the fine.
Completely nonsensical again by FIFA. Did they not make a political decision when they deliberately kept Kosovo & Bosnia apart in the draw for WC2018 qualifiers?
I suppose they want some of the money back that they gave us for that little handball by Mr. Henry
Fifa are so corrupt they would fine themselves to get money
