A GP REPRESENTATIVE group are disputing the numbers of GPs reported to be signed up to the new Under 6s free GP scheme.
Minister of State for Primary Care Kathleen Lynch said in the Dáil this week that around 830 GPs had returned contracts.
However, the National Association of General Practitioners say the figures reported would represent ‘a remarkable jump’.
NAGP CEO, Mr Chris Goodey said that only 2% of GPs said they had returned sign contracts less than two weeks ago.
We are also aware that there are huge areas of the country where all GPs have decided not to sign. There would seem to be considerable variance between that information and the figures presented by the Minister.
Minister Lynch rejected the suggestion that the information provided by her was inaccurate.
“There has been far too much misinformation circulated in an attempt to dissuade GPs from participating in the scheme.
The NAGP may wish to question the veracity of their own research, which is at variance with the facts.
Under pressure
Goodey also criticised the pressure being placed on GPs to sign up to the scheme.
“GPs are being forced into signing this contract under duress, despite their personal opposition regarding issues concerning patient safety and moral principles.
“If there was ever an example of how not to build a better health system and a better relationship with service providers, this is it. The coercion that has been brought to bear on GPs throughout this process is unacceptable.”
However the Minister stated, “In my experience, GPs are more than capable of deciding for themselves, based on true and accurate information, if they wish to participate.”

To be fair to the journal, I think they should publish an article outlining why they have stopped reporting on privileged dail activity that is 100% in the public interest. Not only stopped, but deleted any references to it, and public comments made by readers.
Just one article is all that is needed, and then follow it by one of your opinion pieces on why it is important to stand up to bullying.

Under 6s have medical cards and yet they are taking them off the over 65s, how does that work again?
When I look at the competency and quality of politicians elected to the dail…. I genuinely despair. I could give ye readers a list – but it would take too long to write. In any event, I doubt it would differ greatly from ye’re own lists. Except. .. maybe this: Lynch is on the very TOP of my list. Most incompetent “representative” I’ve ever encountered. Thankfully. …. not for much longer.
Meanwhile the Minister for health has deemed waiting to see a consultant for 2 years is excessive so all of a sudden the private sector which is vastly subsidised by the taxpayer’s will sort out the problems.
Yes let’s enrich the private sector at the taxpayer’s expense sure haven’t we got an election coming up.These polticians and their advisors really do beleave that the Irish people are all fools.
O I was wondering are any of these private medical centres owned by DOB ,I would hate to think he would be losing out financialy if operations are paid for by the state.

Didn’t we have a situation a few years back when a judge was found to have child pornography on his laptop but the arrest warrent, valid for 7 days was not executed until a few hours after the warrent had expired. Gardai not doing their job properly again? ??? Or being influenced by those in power??? Either way – the “haves” can always slither their way out of anything.
