The moon and the star: Toner in 2020. Dan Sheridan/INPHO

Dev strikes the right Tone as he equals D'Arcy's appearance record

The Leinster lock will make his 261st appearance for his home province this evening.

TO EVERYONE ELSE, it is a dead rubber, a box to be ticked; a game that will be dwarfed by the enormity of those matches scheduled for tomorrow.

But to Devin Toner, tonightโ€™s date with Ospreys (Live 8.15pm, TG4, eir Sport) is something much greater than that. This appearance, the 261st of his Leinster career, draws him level with Gordon Dโ€™Arcyโ€™s provincial appearance record. To add further context to Tonerโ€™s longevity, the team he made his debut against, way back in 2006, is no longer in existence.

At that stage, Leinsterโ€™s trophy cabinet looked somewhat bare.

Theyโ€™d won a Celtic League, but nothing else. Now, theyโ€™ve added six more of those trophies (the Celtic League reinventing itself as the PRO14) as well as four European Cups and a Challenge Cup. Add in the three Six Nations titles Toner has won with Ireland and you have a fairly decorative CV to be proud of.

Another title comes tonight, the joint all-time appearance holder for Leinster.

Keeping him company in the pack is Scott Fardy, one of six internationals in Leinsterโ€™s team โ€“ which is quite the accomplishment when you remember that a further 12 are in the match day 23 for Irelandโ€™s game against England tomorrow, while Dan Leavy, James Ryan and Garry Ringrose are all injured.

There is a milestone too for Ospreysโ€™ Dan Evan, who makes his 200th appearance in the Guinness PRO14.

Rhys Henry makes his first Ospreys start while Cai Evans returns from lengthy injury. โ€œLeinster have a final to look forward to and various bits and pieces, they are much further down the track in their progression and they are the benchmark for people to measure themselves against,โ€ said the Ospreys head coach, Toby Booth.

โ€œItโ€™s another opportunity for the Ospreys to move forward, as a group and to see how much we can transfer on a weekly basis. The one thing I would celebrate around this group of players is that they learn the lessons pretty quickly.

โ€œThat is a sign of a team which has potential and we need to keep pushing that potential into performance and wins. We talk about having pride in our performance, so when we look back at it, we have pride in what we do.โ€

Tonight pride will most likely come before a fall.

He is absolutely right. For far too long the mentality is and this even goes to the our nick name the โ€ wee county โ€ that we are a small county so we dont expect to do well. If we beat a Kildare or a Meath the year is a success which is not acceptable. We have a bigger population than most. Louth does have a large choice to pick from. Look at the counties that surround Louth. Dublin, Meath, Monaghan, Armagh and Down have all enjoyed success in All Ireland competition were Louth is left behind. The question has to be asked, why? Cause the mentality is not right, we shoukd be expecting to beat the teams I just mentioned except for Dublin who are a professional team in everything but name. Dublin are showing the future of GAA and fair play to them.

Winning a Leinster Championship would absolutely be a success for Louth as it has not happened for a long long time. Its all about making baby steps forward to an ultimate target. Why cant they get to the knock out stages of the All Ireland series and build from there year on year. Ciaran Byrne a superb talent whi recently joined Carlton in the AFL even said it himself in an Irish Independent interview โ€œwe are a small county so we dont really have a chance in winning a Leinster or All Irelandโ€ so if a mentality like that is in a young star at that stage its definetly an issue and it shouldnt be. 2 of the biggest towns in the country in our county. Some people forget this. We have been perennial underachievers in my opinion.

improvement in the league might be more realistic over the next couple of years as this dublin squad and management have a fixation on winning and that includes Leinster titles and I agree as a dub I would love to see Louth challenge for leinsters

Patrick you say you should be expecting to beat teams except Dublin thatโ€™s great mentality way better so getting to a Leinster final and its against Dublin do you reckon thereโ€™s any point in heading up to croke park
