Derry prove too strong for Louth in All-Ireland football qualifiers

While Carlow got the better of Wicklow in Dr. Cullen Park.

Derry 1-18
Louth 2-10

JAMES KIELT SCORED 1-9, including a second-half penalty, as Derry overcame Louth in round 1A of the All-Ireland football qualifiers at Owenbeg.

The hosts trailed at the break, Jim McEneaneyโ€™s picking himself up after being fouled to slot home a penalty and give the Wee County a 1-5 to 0-7 lead.

However, Kielt and Derry took control in the second-half, outscoring their guests by 0-8 to 0-2 in the opening 15 minutes but a Declan Byrne goal on the hour mark reduced the gap to just two points.

The Ulstermen were not to be denied though as a penalty from Kielt five minutes from time put the game beyond reach and it is Derry who advance to the next round of the qualifiers with a four-point win.

Carlow 1-17
Wicklow 1-12

Elsewhere in 1A of the qualifiers, Carlow secured a five-point win over Wicklow at Dr. Cullen Park this evening thanks, in large part, to a blistering start.

The home side raced into a 1-3 to no score lead, Brendan Murphyโ€™s maximum sandwiched between points from Darragh Foley (2) and Daniel St. Ledger.

Carlow led by as many as eight points in the opening half but Paul Cunninghamโ€™s goal ensure Wicklow went into the break trailing by just four, 1-5 to 1-9.

As the sides traded points in the second half, the visitors could never get closer than two and Carlow ran out comfortable five-point winners on a scoreline of 1-17 to 1-12.
