WHEN DERMOT MCCABE takes to the sideline at TEG Cusack Park on Sunday afternoon, his fellow Cavan All-Star Raymond Galligan wonโt be too far away.
The Westmeath manager is facing his native county in Division 2 of the Allianz Football League, with two former Cavan players going head-to-head on the inter-county management beat.
Itโs a rare occurrence, made even more so by McCabeโs unique situation which spans both sides of the county โ and provincial โ border.
Heโs a full-time Games Development Manager [GDM] for Cavan GAA, and has been for the last decade.
It was indeed a source of interest and debate after McCabeโs appointment to the Westmeath helm, Cavan county board discussing its employeeโs installation at a meeting in October.
While this is McCabeโs first job in senior inter-county management, he was a selector with Cavan as they won the Ulster football championship in 2020.
That ended a 23-year wait for provincial glory, McCabe central as a player in the Breffni countyโs last success in 1997.
He won an All-Star that year, and no Cavan player followed suit until 2020.
His opposing manager on Sunday, former goalkeeper Galligan, was one of three included in that selection along with Pรกdraig Faulkner and Thomas Galligan.
Standing alongside McCabe will be another tenuous link to โ97. Westmeath are coached by Donegal All-Ireland winner Mark McHugh, whose father Martin was manager of Cavan back then.
The duo will have a distinctive insight into their opponents, with McCabe coaching many of the players in the county set-up, and as Gowna county winning manager in 2022 and 2023. He was also joint-manager of the Cavan minor side that won the 2011 Ulster Championship.
It all adds to the rivalry between neighbouring counties from different provinces.
Westmeath and Cavan contested the first-ever Tailteann Cup final in 2022, Westmeath winning by four points in Croke Park.
The sides need no introduction to one another, nor a reminder of the opportunity that lies ahead in Mullingar on Sunday.
The league has been challenging for both so far, and they need something to kickstart it with relegation โ and the threat of losing their Sam Maguire Cup status โ looming large.
Cavan got off the mark last weekend, a late win over Louth a huge boost after earlier defeats to Monaghan and Meath.
Westmeath are yet to get points on the board. They were well beaten by Monaghan, but were unlucky to come away from the Louth and Cork clashes empty-handed.
The 2024 Division 3 champions were on the wrong side of a 3-18 to 3-17 scoreline at SuperValu Pรกirc Uรญ Chaoimh last weekend.
โWe donโt like moral victories but every lad tried his hardest,โ McCabe said afterwards, while questioning footballโs new rules.
โThe lads are stepping up. Weโre one of the youngest teams in all the divisions of the National League and theyโre giving us everything.
โWe couldโve got something out of definitely two of the three games. Them couple of late scores are just hard to take.โ
Heโll be hoping to turn the tide against his native county on Sunday afternoon.
Heโs right. And its annoying the way Klopp is treated by the English media like the second coming of Jebus just coz heโs a โright onโ guy, but hasnโt actually achieved anything yet
In fairness to Klopp, he has managed to turn a bang average squad into title challengers while maintaining an entertaining style of play.
The high tempo style may cost them in the run in though with tiring legs and all that.
Did he not win the Bundesliga twice and get to a champions league final with Dortmund?
What with one game a week most weeks ?? Behave!
Mark, I think he was talking not achieving anything at Liverpool yet.
Of course Liverpool won,t the league, thats not their thing. Might top league for a couple of weeks then top clubs take over at the business end of things
No $hit sherlock !!!
Only saying what Klopp has already said himself. Would require too many good teams to have extended bad runs as it stands, and with the weaknesses in the squad he inherited. The likes of Matip, Klavern (and even Mane) will be better next season.. But when you see how well some of the new players have integrated already, and then the improvement in for for the like of Lallana, whatever about winning PL titles heโs certainly building a formidable LFC challenge to other contendersโฆ.
Next year is Liverpools year
@Irishoversea: donโt know about that but certainly with Klopp at the helm, and extra revenue from 15,000 extra bums on seats there is every possibility that LFC will be consistently contending for major honours over the next couple of seasons.
Reality is only one team can win every year, so even with all the improvements you still need a big dollop of luck (injuries, schedul etc..) to pick up the silverwareโฆ
Nothing brings out the idiots better than a Liverpool threadโฆ.. Beating there chests when there own team is beating up nobodies, much with the help of terrible officiatingโฆ..
โtheirโ
@Aaron Hynes: yes, your right. Great accomplishment.
@William Kavanagh: youโre
