Kerry player Moran waits to discover damage to eye after freak accident

The 25 year-old underwent a laser procedure to his eye in hospital in Cork on Sunday.

KERRYโ€™S DAVID MORAN will not know until next week what damage he has suffered to his eye after a freak accident in a challenge match against Laois on Saturday.

The 25 year-old sustained the blow after catching a kickout in a game where he had been introduced as a substitute.

Kingdom selector Diarmuid Murphy confirmed last night to TheScore.ie that Moran underwent a laser procedure on his eye in Cork University Hospital on Sunday after suffering a tear to his retina.

Moran, who has torn his cruciate twice in the last two years and sustained a shoulder injury earlier this season, must now wait to discover the extent of the injury.

โ€œIt was a freak thing and he just got a bang straight on the eye ball,โ€ outlined Murphy.

โ€œHe caught a kickout and a fella tried to dislodge the ball out of his hands. The retina was torn really. He had a laser procedure as thatโ€™s less invasive than surgery.

โ€œItโ€™ll become clear in about a week to 10 days exactly how it went. He goes back in next week and they have a look at it again. Itโ€™s a freak injury really. It could happen to any body at any time. He was just unlucky.โ€

Moran is definitely ruled out of Kerryโ€™s Munster championship tie with Tipperary on Sunday week in Thurles. But Murphy backed the Kerins Oโ€™Rahillyโ€™s club man to bounce back.

โ€œItโ€™s a pity for him. But this isnโ€™t the end of the year for him really. The best case scenario is that he wonโ€™t be out of action for too long and heโ€™ll be back soon enough.

โ€œHeโ€™s put in a huge amount of work in getting himself back right. He was finding a bit of form and hopefully heโ€™ll be back in action again soon.โ€
