EX-LIVERPOOL DEFENDER Daniel Agger has suggested his former side over-achieved last term and that as a result, expectations were higher heading into the current campaign.
The Merseyside outfit have struggled to cope with the loss of both Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge – the former sold to Barcelona in the summer while the latter’s injury problems have ensured he’s made just 3 appearances since the season started.
Currently languishing in 11th place in the Premier League table, Brendan Rodgers’ side did manage a win against Stoke City on Saturday – their first league victory since October.
Speaking to Philip O’Connor of Reuters, Agger says the club’s second-place finish last season may have been misleading.
Maybe we over-achieved last year with the squad we had, so when we start a new season the expectations would be really, really high. It’s always difficult after such a great season.”
“Also in the Premier League now there’s not just one, two, three, four good teams. There’s seven, eight, nine, 10,” he said. “The other major difference from when I started is that everybody can beat everybody.”
How Liverpool could do with Agger currently. The team’s defensive issues have been well-documented and Rodgers may well be regretting his decision to allow the 29 year-old quietly return to his native Denmark in the summer. It was a breakdown in the pair’s relationship that led to the move though Agger still refuses to be drawn on what exactly happened.
“Of course there were reasons. I haven’t really shared my reasons with anyone – I have them, and that’s why I did what I did, and I’m happy with that. If I could write everything myself, I would have stayed there (at Liverpool) for the whole of my contract period, but I felt it wasn’t right. It was a mix of football and the feeling of my body not being able to play the physical games, but the most important thing was that I wasn’t happy going to training every day.”
“I had a great home there, my family enjoyed it, my kids enjoyed it there, they felt a big part of Liverpool. To be honest, I miss it.”
Daniel Agger says the sky is blue.
Selling Agger was a huge mistake. Most consistent defender for Liverpool last season & sold because Rodgers would rather spend 20 million on a player who had one good season.
No mistake Dan, the chap was a very average central defender. Not strong enough in the air, easily outmuscled, and his positional sense was awful at times. He looked good with the ball at his feet, and had a cracking strike of the ball but they papered over the cracks. If he is so good, then why were brondby the only club in for him?
He simply chose heart over money. Brondby was the first club he played for and chose to go back to them instead of following the money like so many footballers today. Just 2 years ago he rejected Barcelona to stay at Liverpool & his performances over the 2 years were pretty consistent.
He no more rejected Barcelona than I did! Gary Breen was linked with Barca once, easiest thing in the world for an agent to spread a story to increase a players value. Personally I was delighted when he finally left, just nowhere near a top class Central defender…. Same as what’s left actually
All that springs to mind here is no shit sherlock!
Liverpool fans slating Agger for pointing out the obvious but when Carragher slates them they all agree with him.Agger was/is a much better central defender than Skrtel/lovrens/Toure will ever be.
Fair play to Agger, he knew to get out before the ship hit the iceberg
a player not playing at a club criticising it what a surprise
Gavin read it again, at no moment did he criticise Liverpool. In fact it would’ve been easy for him to do just that as he could’ve been treated better by Rodgers.
Did you work they out all by yourself Daniel.
