Croatia fined €80,000 by UEFA for racist abuse

…which, if we’ve done our maths right, is €20,000 less than Nicklas Bendtner got for his underpants stunt.

UEFA HAVE SLAPPED an €80,000 fine on the Croatian FA for the behaviour of their fans during their Euro 2012 against Italy last Wednesday.

The two teams, who were in Group C alongside Ireland and Spain, drew 1-1 in Poznan but the game ended on a sour note as racist abuse was directed at Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli, with a banana allegedly thrown in his direction.

Fireworks were also set off in the stands and after investigating the incidents, UEFA have decided to take disciplinary action.

The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) has been fined €80,000 for the setting-off and throwing of fireworks, and the improper conduct of supporters (racist chants, racist symbols) at the UEFA EURO 2012 Group C match against Italy in Poznan on Thursday 14 June,” a UEFA statement read.

“An appeal can be lodged against this decision within three days of the dispatch of the reasoned decision.”

Despite the charge, there has already been criticism directed their way on Twitter for the fine being €20,000 less than the one handed to Nicklas Bendtner for celebrating a goal by unveiling a pair of Paddy Power underpants.

Wow, Poznan is really going to miss the Irish fans when they leave

Don’t want to be Whelan-bashing, but we came to life when he went off in Gelsenkirchen. Instinct is to play backwards all the time. Suited Trap perfectly but hopefully we have moved on.
