Imokilly 1-23
Sarsfields 0-17
DIVISIONAL OUTFIT IMOKILLY reign supreme in Cork senior hurling again, as they slipped into a higher gear in the second half to storm past title holders Sarsfields in today’s final.
Trailing by six at the break, Imokilly ran out nine-point victors as they harnessed the powerful wind at their backs in the second half.
Man-of-the-match Jack Leahy rifled over eleven points for Imokilly, while Cork senior Ciaran Joyce was immense at the heart of their defence.
The crucial score arrived three minutes into the second half, Imokilly pouncing for the only goal of the game as Bill Cooper overturned a short Sarsfields puckout, feeding Adam Murphy and he finished emphatically to the net.
That score helped make amends for a couple of goal chances Imokilly missed in the opening period, while Sean Desmond had one harshly disallowed for a square ball infringement, when he appeared to be standing outside.
Inspired by Daniel Hogan’s four first-half points, Sarsfields hurled with authority early on as they sought to complete back-to-back titles for the first time in the club’s history. They were in front 0-6 to 0-3 after 17 minutes before making a significant charge as they reeled off five points without reply courtesy of Hogan (2), Cork senior Jack O’Connor, Paul Leopold, and Cian Darcy.
Imokilly, heavy favourites beforehand, trailed 0-11 to 0-3 but managed to critically weather the storm and bag two points before the break courtesy of Shane Hegarty and Sean Desmond.
They pushed up on Sarsfields’ puckout in the second half as Brian Lawton, a sweeper in the opening period, switched to a conventional attacking spot.
Murphy’s goal and a Diarmuid Healy point seconds later, both stemmed from pressure placed on the Sarsfields puckouts. As scores were exchanged, Imokilly were hitting their stride to go ahead 1-11 to 0-13 in the 42nd minute, Leahy notching a brace and Seamus Harnedy also chipping in with two.
Sarsfields steadied their challenge and when Aaron Myers smashed over a shot in the 47th minute, they were ahead 0-16 to 1-12, and has reason to be confident they could compete heading down the stretch.
Instead Imokilly showcased their strength and class to outscore Sarsfields 0-12 to 0-1 for the remainder of the game. Joyce was terrific in this phase, while Daire O’Leary and Timmy Wilk were also hugely prominent in defence.
Six different players contributed to that late scoring spree with midfielder Shane Hegarty clipping over two scores, and Leahy starring as he weighed in with five.
It was a spell sufficient to clinch their fourth title in eight campaigns, while Sarsfields must now recover to represent Cork in the Munster club championship, a semi-final against Clare’s Feakle or Sixmilebridge.

Fitzgerald’s kicking when he came on for Horwitz in his last game was top drawer. Interesting to see how he goes from the start in such a big game. A result for Connacht would be massive.
Was Blade released from the Irish squad, or did he just not return after last week? I thought he was in the extended squad announced on Tuesday?
@Darragh Murray: He was in the extended squad but got released.. so looks like Murray and Cooney for Italy game.. let’s home Cooney starts
@Tom Kenny: didn’t see that announced anywhere, thanks Tom!
Ok maybe I’m missing something here , but I don’t see a back up out half anywhere unless you count TOH or MH having to slot in !! Also where’s Horwitz and Copeland !!! Both seem to have gone MIA !!
@©️⚙️NNA©️HT6️⃣6️⃣: Godwin at centre is also a fly half at times.
Horwitz has been quite unimpressive at 10 this year.
@David Hickey: I think he’s been solid most of the time but he had an absolute mare in his last game. I wouldn’t write him off just yet, but I can see why he’s not in the team atm.
@ScewMadd: For me he has been a 6 out of 10 player. Unimpressive. By no means bad. (Although a fortnight ago was a travesty).
@©️⚙️NNA©️HT6️⃣6️⃣: Copeland has fairly significant hip surgery before Christmas!! Probably be another few weeks before we see him again!!
He hasn’t settled in I think , the weather is a big factor for a 10 and well Sportsground weather is a real Ripley’s believe it or not, time to give up on SH tens and get them from nearer home in future me thinks
@©️⚙️NNA©️HT6️⃣6️⃣: he was always an odd choice, in as much as he wasn’t an out and out 10, or at least he had filled in at twelve a good bit in his career, kind of the opposite of Godwin. He left Tahs to get game time at Rebels and then promptly couldn’t get in their match day squad – announcing half way into the season he was off to Connacht might not have helped. To be fair Western Force being disbanded meant there suddenly was a lot more availability and competition for slots in the remaining Aussie team’s squads. I thought it was strange the clamour on here that he would unseat Carty considering no one had seen him kick. As it turned out in a positive sense it hasn’t been so much a case of Horwitz failing as Carty succeeding. With Jack’s form we may need Horwitz next autumn anyway!
Ronaldson will be back in the picture another questionable 10, FITZGERALD looks the part,
