Late goals rescue Cork hurlers and ensure Galway suffer setback of relegation

Seamus Harnedy and Patrick Horgan struck key late goals.

Cork 2-22
Galway 0-25

Declan Rooney reports from Pearse Stadium

GALWAY HAVE BEEN relegated to Division 1B of the Allianz hurling league after a couple of late goals from Cork’s Seamus Harnedy and Patrick Horgan rescued the Rebels at Pearse Stadium today.

Galway looked to be cruising to safety after they had recovered from a five-point deficit midway through the first-half to lead by three points with ten minutes remaining.

But despite 0-13 haul from the brilliant Joe Canning, Galway collapsed at the death as Harnedy and Horgan fired the goals that see Cork retain their top flight status.

Cork held a five-point lead as they were 0-9 to 0-4 ahead after just 12 minutes. They were spectacular in those opening exchanges, all nine points came from play, from five different scorers as the Galway defence proved generous in the extreme with their loose marking.

After four minutes Cork led 0-3 to 0-1 as Alan Cadagon, Brian Lawton and Daniel Kearney all found the target for the Rebels, and after Canning and Cathal Mannion pointed for the home side to level it, three in a row from Lawton, Kearney and Bill Copper put Cork on the front foot.

Andy Smith did stop the run of Cork scorers with a good point from the right for Galway, but another three without reply from Conor Lehane (2) and Cadagon put Cork well ahead.

But as good as Cork had been to that point, they still only led 0-14 to 0-13 at half-time as Canning began to exert an influence on the action.

Aidan Harte pointed for Galway before he left the action in a dazed state, but six of the last seven points of the half meant Galway were well in it at the interval.

With Canning on from from placed balls Galway were good value for for an 0-18 to 0-17 lead after 46 minutes – the first time they led in the game – but with Lehane in superb form for Cork they were soon level.

A Canning 65, a point from Pardaig Behony and a Canning free soon had Galway three point clear, but when Harnedy’s mis-hit shot found the net in the 61st minute and Lehane pointed immediately, Cork went a point ahead.

Cathal Mannion drew Galway level with five minutes to go, but when Horgan pulled a loose ball to the net in the 68th minute the win was Cork’s.

Scorers – Cork: Patrick Horgan 1-7 (0-3f), Conor Lehane 0-6, Alan Cadagon 0-3, Seamus Harnedy 1-0, Daniel Kearney 0-2, Brian Lawton 0-2, William Egan 0-1, Bill Cooper 0-1.

Scorers – Galway: Joe Canning 0-13 (11f, 1’65, 1’sl), Niall Burke 0-3, Cathal Mannion 0-3, David Burke 0-1, Aidan Harte 0-1, Padraig Brehony 0-1, Conor Whelan 0-1, Iarla Tannian 0-1, Amdy Smith 0-1.

Galway hae great support but they should be letting the players know that this isn’t on , to get a good hurling man like cunningham sacked was a disgrace

Shameful how cork can stay up 0 wins and 0 points cause today was a playoff game. Galway 2 draws and 1 win and 4 points and they go down. Headquarters really need to have a look at this for all the divisions

Seanie, if Galway can’t beat a team who didn’t win a league game all this season ( Cork) and in Pearse Stadium, it’s not as if Galway did not know the rules of the league ( bottom two in relegation final) , and again “fail” in a “final” then maybe Division 2 hurling ( called 1b ) is a correct level for them to be playing at presently . The players have no excuses. The senior players not scoring enough from open play and not scoring goals !!
Cunningham can’t be blamed for this one.
When is the last time that a Division 2 ( 1b) team won the Liam McCarthy?
Come on Galway bounce back from another setback !!

If the league was ran off again tomorrow some other two teams in Div one might end up in the bottom two as there is very little between Galway Tipp Cork Dublin waterford and now even Killkenny have come “back” closer to this group. It is hard luck on Galway to be relagated but does it really matter? Clare and limerick are in the league semi final and both will have a big say in this years championship.

Come back Anthony. Clearly you were not the problem. A diet of humble pie for the team might do them good as they wait months for their next match of any consequence.

Dubious Frees? Corks John cronin got spear tackled by a galway player at the end, and the ref gave a free to galway? Overall the free count was by far in Galways favour. Without the 11 from Frees from Jo Canning, the margin would have been alot more convincing.

Totally false when a team with no points stays up.a new system where bottom team should be automatically relegated is the way to go cuts out a needless match.
