FORMER CORK ALL-Ireland SFC medallists John Coleman, John O’Driscoll and Nicholas Murphy will form part of the committee to find the next senior football manager of the Rebels.
With Brian Cuthbert having announced after the loss to Kildare that he wouldn’t seek re-appointment, the three former players – Coleman of Millstreet won in 1973, O’Driscoll (Béal Áthan Ghaorthaidh) in ’89 and ’90 and Carrigaline’s Murphy in 2010 – will join county chairman Ger Lane and secretary Frank Murphy in searching for a successor.
Elsewhere, the executive of the board drew considerable ire from delegates for the infamous statement released in the wake of Cuthbert’s stepping-down.
Lane had expressed regret that elements of the statement were interpreted as criticism of Munster final referee Pádraig Hughes and apologised.
“The board issued a statement to thank Brian for his tenure as manager,” he said, “some parts of that were interpreted as criticism of the referee, that was never the intention.”
Delegates made clear their disappointment, with Patrick Andrews (Shamrocks) saying “you wouldn’t see it in Father Ted,” while Frank McCarthy of Ballincollig pulled no punches.
“You have embarrassed the county, you let us down deplorably, and no apology this late will excuse what you did.”
Also the subject of criticism was Dónal Óg Cusack, with many unhappy with his portrayal of them as “stooges” and “yes-men” on The Sunday Game after Cork’s hurling loss to Galway.
“I was at both games, we were beaten fair and square,” said Lyre delegate Patrick Muphy.
“I had a problem with the Sunday Game, an analyst paid by the taxpayer, calling the likes of ourselves names. I have never been a yes-man and, if people like them or not, that’s it.
“Everyone who comes here does so for the good of Cork GAA, they get into their cars and make the effort.”
Meanwhile, it had been expected appointments of minor hurling, minor football and junior football managers would be made, but the filling of both minor roles was delayed. Paul McCarthy (Kinsale) was re-appointed as junior football boss.
Stephen Calnan (Nemo Rangers) will be coach, while Alan Whelan (Brian Dillons), John Geaney (Kilshanning) and Pat Mackey (Youghal) will be selectors.
Typical Cork county board move, bring in three All-Ireland winners to give credibility to the selection committee but yet a certain Mr F. Murphy is also on the committee. Now please tell me, who Really will make the decision on the next Cork football manager. God help us.
Awful stuff -our worst year since 1962 and nothing changing-meanwhile the ladies and camogie teams, not under the CCB, are tipping along nicely even though some of them had to play football quarter last Saturday and camogie semi on Sunday.
Yeah regular Dennis O’ Brien over here
Would you be bothered though?
The Cork board don’t give a toss anymore, they have been in for a generation and the fire is gone, the pleasure and the joy of the job remains though.
If they cared half as much about Cork GAA as they do about attacking Donal Og at every opportunity then Cork wouldn’t be in such a terrible state.
About time Cusack was called out. Happy to take the coin as a pundit and slate all and sundry but not bothered by getting involved with coaching the next generation.
The county board is a joke but Donal og has clearly his own agenda since going on TV. Probably the must subjective analyst who can’t talk about a loss without mentioning the county board.
The strikes had as bad an impact on cork hurling as much as anything else. No one wants to touch a managerial role now.
He trains his local club minors
actually get your facts right. He is coach to St Colman’s minor hurlers. As u are probably not aware Colman’s are a combined Cloyne/Russell Rovers underage outfit who under Donal og are through to the Cork county hurling semi finals. So get your facts right
Wrong as usual knobson.
As a Corkman I am very aware that he trains st Coleman’s but I thought as there is a lot of non-cork people on here it would be too hard to explain
nobody was criticising you Johnny
sorry Johnny my comments were meant for Robsonkeane n not for u. Apologies
You do realise this type of shite goes on at every county board meeting across the country on a monthly basis?
But we are the All Ireland champs at it.
At least we have that
Yes but it’s a lot funnier when it’s the big boys throwing their toys around.
The lads that go for election on county boards are of the same lads who run for county councils and ultimately the Dail, they are also the same lads who pestered you to vote for them in school so they could get to strut their stuff on student councils and student unions etc. it’s a need that’s ingrained in them, probably genetic.
That’s a good point Dermot, same mentality.
““The tremendous performance of the team in the drawn Munster Final has been widely acknowledged, and it is quite probable that but for a totally wrong refereeing decision in that game, Cork would now be in an All-Ireland Semi-Final”
Mr Lane said that people misinterpreted the criticism of Referee ….. Can some please explain this to me … I’m lost …. Im reading that the referee is at fault for Corks failure this year????
Hold on s second here, when kerry scored the penalty which they should not have got, cork were still a point up with time running out. They then got a 45 which they stupidly kicked into the square for Donaghy to catch instead of going short and holding possession. Kerry go up the field and get equaliser. If Cork were still good enough to grace an all Ireland semi this yr they had a 70 minute replay to prove it in which they managed 2points in 35 min of second half. We won’t go into the Kildare game . It’s a blessing in disguise they didn’t make a semi for their own sake
ah now, sure haven’t we already been told that the weather was to blame for the replay
Murphy should go …. but not much chance of that happening until Stade de Frank is complete
The whole top table should go it’s been the same faces with God knows how long.
And don’t get me started on that stadium! They want ten million from the clubs to complete it! It costs on average about €400 to enter a team into a competition. Now you multiply that by the 380 or so clubs in Cork and multiply it again by the amount of age groups and 2nd 3rd teams each club has.
Basically each club is giving the county board between 3-5000 euro on entry fee’s alone. So even if you averaged it out to 4000 multiply that by 380 and you get over a million and a half…. On entry fee’s alone… Not to mention attendances, sponsorships, TV money etc… A year… For how many years.
Which is fine. Well it would be fine, if we had a centre of excellence already, if they helped out smaller clubs that were in trouble etc.. But instead they’ve been hoarding that money and now we know why! It’s a sh!t of a stadium design to begin with but the fact that they want more money from clubs is an absolute joke.
If they come looking for more money, the delegates have to demand accountability in the form of a webpage that tells us exactly what is being done with our money… and each club should get a share of the gate receipts forever more, from games and concerts.
Sure Cork have never legitimately lost a game in either code. They’ve only ever been robbed or cheated.
silly comment.
Frank Murphy is on the committee that tells you everything you need to know!
I think its a combination of both looking from a distance both Murphy and striking hurlers of the noughties are toxic to each other… Neither will yield so its yer underage that has suffered because all that knowledge lost to county underage. .. no coinicidence nothing won since 2000… Galway far from perfect but at least were popping up with minors and 21s every few years. Hopefully we’ll get over the line this year….
Frank Murphy has been in charge of Cork GAA since the early 70s.
frank Murphy too much power. He’s the one that needs to go if Cork are going to push on.
The little min of the nGAA have politics down to a tee. A constitution that would do justice to the American Constitution is often ignored rather than interpreted, run by the power hungry. The whole system should be streamlined and rules that are ignored should be replaced by rules that cannot be ignored. The penalties should be definite. At the moment there are too many loopholes and contradictions.
Surely poor Frank cannot be responsible for all Cork’s problems. There must be more to it than that. I reckon the next football manager will be from Ballingeary….
