CORK FORWARD COLM OโNeill was told by referee Cormac Reilly that there was โa minute or so leftโ when he kicked his late free in yesterdayโs All-Ireland quarter-final against Mayo.
OโNeill tapped over an injury-time free in Croke Park to cut the deficit that Cork faced to a single point rather than trying to score a match-winning goal.
But despite being told there would be time for Cork to try to get an equalizer, OโNeill then saw referee Cormac Reilly blow for full-time from the subsequent kick out.
OโNeill opted not to discuss the controversial ending in detail after the match but did confirm that the Meath whistler told him there โa minute or so leftโ before he took the late kick.
Cork boss Brian Cuthbert also revealed afterwards that selector Ciaran OโSullivan had been informed of the same message by the referee.
But Cuthbert refused to blame Reilly for Corkโs exit from the 2014 championship.
โLook youโre going to have calls for and against you, some days they go with you, some days they donโt. Weโre certainly not looking at the referee as to why weโre not going on to the semi-final.
โWe just left ourselves with too much of a hill to climb after half-time, going in six or seven points down, itโs a huge ask to come back against a very good team like Mayo to win the game.
โThe lesson for us is donโt put yourself in a position where youโre hanging on for a last-minute free to decide whether youโre going to have to go for a goal or wait for more time.
โIโd be immensely proud of my guys, they gave everything theyโve got. (Their) character was questioned, their desire was questioned; and I would like to think they answered that today.โ
Cuthbert reflected on that third quarter period as the spell that contributed most to Corkโs demise.
โWe lost a few kick outs, lost a few breaks. They were able to come at us. A lot of things weโd spoken about, we took the ball in to contact too much and they were able to turn us over.
โTheyโre very good at that. Once they turn you over, youโre wide open. We just took the ball in to contact when we shouldnโt have. They got a lot of their scores there from that. Just silly mistakes.โ
Two very average sides at the moment, the premier league has been in steady decline for a number of years now.
Both teams not in great form but Utd have the knack of winning games this season when they could be drawing or losing them which could be the difference on Sunday but in saying that it is Man Utd v Liverpool and form tends to go out the window in these games and Iโm sure both teams will be fired up for it.
Dont care what gary neville thinks.. lvg is a winner
I watched a good bit of this game, itโs the first time I have seen UTD since the beginning of the season. They havenโt improved much. How are they 3rd.
Because the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, Everton etc, their main rivals from last year are playing worse than Utd this season.
No itโs not. Itโs because theyโve got 28 points from 15 games and would be top 4 with that tally any other season too.
I wish yeโd actually upload the video of van Gaalโs response. He is so outraged, itโs brilliant!
Sorry, wasnโt up when I first posted.
In fairness he is right to say he has to pay attention to his words. They needed three points from St. Marys and they got them. There is no point in a past player wading in and being critical when they are 3rd in the league. At least wait until after the New Year to bash the team.
Gway they wouldnโt beat Eggs..
It was a dire performance by Utd. However for the 3 clear chances Utd they converted two which has to be seen as good. On a rugby pitch that would be an excellent return, especially if the other side were dominating possession like Southampton were last night.
3rd in the league and facing Liverpool on Sunday with a number of straight winsโฆits shaping up to be a cracker for both sides!!
