CONOR McGREGORโS BIGGEST detractors have often questioned his ability to compete with elite wrestlers, but the Irish mixed martial arts star is eager to put those doubts to bed.
With a background in boxing, McGregor is one of the most impressive strikers in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Such has been the dominant nature of all five of his UFC wins so far, the Dublinerโs grappling hasnโt reared its head.
Although heโs shown glimpses of adept takedown defence, McGregorโs superb striking has got him to where he is today โ one win away from being crowned the UFCโs featherweight world champion.
Some are adamant that McGregorโs weaknesses will be exposed when he goes up against a high-level grappler. That question might be answered when he takes on reigning title-holder Jose Aldo โ a black belt in Brazilian jiu-itsu โ in Las Vegas on 11 July.
But the top two contenders next in line in the UFCโs featherweight division โ Frankie Edgar and Chad Mendes โ are among the best wrestlers in the game, and McGregor is likely to cross paths with them eventually.
โThat wrestler question is definitely one I want to answer,โ McGregor told reporters in Las Vegas. โItโs a question the fans want answered, itโs a question the media want answered. How will he react?
โA guy asked me the other day, is it personal? Do you really want to get in and show everyone what you can do? Itโs never personal, itโs business. Business is business, they want to see me tested against a wrestler. They believe thatโs a question thatโs yet to be answered. So if itโs good business, Iโm in it.โ
As for a potential meeting with Frankie Edgar or Chad Mendes, McGregor says heโs happy to fight either of them โ if and when the opportunity arises โ and isnโt too bothered about whoโll be first.
He said: โI think Frankieโs got a bit better boxing than [Chad Mendes], he puts his shots a little bit better than Chad. I think Chad is more just a wrestler with an overhand right. He swings his overhand, looks at the floor, closes his eyes and hopes for it to land.
โTo me thatโs novice. Thatโs day-one beginner stuff where I come from. Frankieโs a former champion but theyโre both in the same bracket. It makes no difference. As long as Iโm on the card, as long as itโs me fighting, itโs a big fight.โ
Rip Eamonn condolences to the family
Great GAA man, RIP
Thatโs very sad, RIP. What happened to him?
@macca1986: None of ur business. Nor is it important at this time
@James: spot on, just pay ur respects. RIP and condolences to his family
@James: only normal to wonder when a news story is portrayed but nothing is stated. As I said RIP, very sad.
@James: itโs an honest question, asked out of concern. No need to be Mr Dick.
@macca1986: agreed Macca, yer man James is a flute. To answer your question(asked in a genuinely concerned manner) he died of a heart attack this morning. I met him at the Kerry-Tyrone semi final in August as we were both in the Hogan Stand. I recognised him and chatted with him briefly. Such a nice man. RIP.
@James: no need to be rude. Itโs just a question lad.
Rest in peace.
Thanks for the memories Eamonn. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam.
R.I.P. very good player in a very good team. 55 is way to young to go.
God rest his soul rip.
RIP. Very young. Remember his 2 points well. Vital scores. Down showed the way for Ulster to dominate for the majority of the 90s. Great servant to his county and sport. Condolences
