DERRY YOUNGSTER CONOR Glass is set to make his AFL debut this weekend as he lines out for Hawthorn.

The international rookie has been elevated to the club’s senior list and selected in the 22 to face the Dockers at Domain Stadium on Saturday.

The former Derry minor captain signed for the Melbourne contingent in October 2015, and headed Down Under after finishing secondary school the following June.

Glass captained the Oak Leaf minor side to Ulster glory in 2015, and lead them to the All-Ireland semi-final.

The Watty Graham’s clubman is joined by Meath native Conor Nash at Hawthorn, and it was actually he who took the call when Glass heard the news of his debut.

“Very happy. A bit cliché but it’s unexpected,” the 19-year-old told Hawks TV.

“Actually, Conor Nash got the phonecall on Wednesday morning. The family [visiting on holidays] were in the back seat and I was driving.

“The first reaction was just shock. Mum was in the back seat jumping up and down, so it couldn’t have been a more perfect spot.

“It’s perfect. It’s in Perth as well, and I have cousins in Perth so it’s going to be a perfect family holiday for them.

“I’ll just let it sink in the next couple of days, and once it comes to game time, I’ll play the same way as I always have and just take it as another game.”

@Allen Durkin: You don’t get to choose the news …it just happens and it’s reported upon. Whilst I’m not really a fan of cricket, I am a sports fan. And so, I like to have an idea what’s happening in the world of sport. A brief 100 word article is perfect for me. I’ve practically no interest in F1, but knowing if the head to head happening therein is kinda interesting. And ultimately, to answer your question, I can think of about 5 people in my immediate circle who are glued to the coverage right now. Cricket does happen here.
