Clare set to 'hurl off the cuff' and 'play with freedom' under new management

Cian Dillon says the new joint-managers are bringing in a different style of play.

CIAN DILLON EXPECTS the Clare hurlers to play a more expansive style of hurling under their new management this season.

Donal Moloney and Gerry Oโ€™Connor, whoโ€™ve been highly successful underage managers in the past, have taken charge of the Banner for the coming year.

The duo guided Clareโ€™s U21 hurlers to three consecutive All-Ireland titles from 2012-2014, and Dillon believes the county will move away from the more โ€œstructuredโ€ style of play they employed under previous boss Davy Fitzgerald.

โ€œI think the new managers are emphasising different things, definitely,โ€ Dillon said.

โ€œThey do focus on certain aspects. Theyโ€™re big on making sure our skill level is as high as it can be and transferring that to game situations. Thatโ€™s one change I can spot.

โ€œWeโ€™re looking to hurl off the cuff really, express ourselves, play with that freedom and do whatโ€™s natural.

โ€œThe likes of Podge (Collins) and Tony Kelly can score from anywhere on their day so itโ€™s giving them the license to do that and the freedom to express themselves.

โ€œOne change I can see is that theyโ€™re giving players license to see things themselves and go for little channels and holes if they appear. Lads seem to be responding to that well so far so itโ€™s a good sign going forward.โ€

Dillon likes what heโ€™s seen so far from the joint-managers, who have clearly made a big impression on the 28-year-old defender.

โ€œTheir working relationship is incredible. Theyโ€™re highly influential businessmen as well so how they get the time to do it and their level of efficiency is something youโ€™d have to admire.

โ€œTheir level of detail and planning is incredible and that feeds into the players straight away.

โ€œBut mainly itโ€™s their appetite for success. Theyโ€™ve had a lot of years at under 21 level and theyโ€™ve achieved a huge amount, something that hasnโ€™t been done in Clare in the past.

โ€œTheyโ€™ve got serious hunger to bring that forward onto senior level.

โ€œThereโ€™s that bit of freshness to it already but thereโ€™s also that bit of continuity as well. In terms of them knowing everyone and Donal ร“g staying on as well.โ€

The Crusheen native doesnโ€™t expect Tony Kelly to feature for Clare in the league over the next few weeks, as heโ€™ll be focusing fully on Ballyeaโ€™s All-Ireland club final on St Patrickโ€™s Day.

Kellyโ€™s club-mate Gary Brennan lined out for the Banner footballers in their league opener against Derry, and has indicated heโ€™ll juggle club and county commitments over the coming weeks

Dillon explained: โ€œFor Gary, thereโ€™s a sense that football is always his number one and always has been.

โ€œJust the fact that Ballyea have gone on such a great run, he has to be available for them.

โ€œI think if it was up to him, heโ€™d play every football game between now and Paddyโ€™s Day. Thatโ€™s just the type of player he is.

โ€œBut I think the other boys are all hurling first and foremost so Iโ€™d imagine theyโ€™ll be left alone with Ballyea.

โ€œWe wish them the best of luck definitely.โ€

That will be a serious achievement if they manage it. Fair play.

Huge respect to them. I know how gruelling open water swimming can be. Spent a Saturday night in Hospital thanks to mild hypothermia!
