THE CHICAGO CUBS ended Americaโs longest sports title drought in dramatic fashion overnight, defeating the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in a 10-inning thriller to capture their first World Series crown since 1908.
The Cubs captured Major League Baseballโs best-of-seven final 4-3, concluding what had been an iconic 108-year run of failure, frustration and futility. But it came only after they squandered a four-run lead and looked ready several times for another heartbreaking stumble.
Ben Zobrist doubled in the go-ahead run and Miguel Montero added a bases-loaded single for an 8-6 Cubs lead in the 10th inning, which followed a 17-minute rain delay after regulation play ended in a 6-6 deadlock.
Rajai Davis, whose two-run home run in the eighth equalized for Cleveland, singled in a run in the 10th for the Indians. But Michael Martinez grounded to third for the final out and a celebration more than a century in the making ensued.
Back to the Future 2 was only one year out with their perdition. Be on the look out for flying deLorens guys!
Easy to get predictions right when you have an almanacโฆ..
Great Scott!!
The Irish fans in for the rugby picked a great weekend with the celebrations in Chicago
Hoping another victory-drought can also be ended this weekend against the All Blacks. OK, I know weโve never beaten them, but you get the idea.
Donโt watch much Baseball TBH, but that was a great game tonight, well deserved by the CC after coming back from 1-3 to win it tonight.
Incredible few hours, cheated somewhat by being a Cubs fan only the past 7 years, but must be unreal for those who have waited a lifetime for this, just a wonderful sporting story
Was a fierce exciting last two hours or so, multiple moments of choking, and a couple of seriously clutch ones. Wouldnโt be into the baseball now, but that was sporting theatre at its best
This phenomenon is even rarer than Mayo winning an All Ireland
More chance of Mayo winning The World Series than Sam
Delighted. What a series, some game tonight. The curse of the billy goat is no more!
GO CUBS GO
Fantastic win for the Cubs coming back from 3 games to 1 down. The atmosphere in the city will electric after this which will be great for the Irish and NZ rugby fans. Great weekend to be in Chicago.
Not a big baseball fan but that was great to watch, well done to both teams.
Christ we will be the only sports team left with a โcurseโ! Ah but then the real curse is all the talk of there being a โcurseโ! Might be the year to put money on the Detroit Lions!
@Spoddgy: I have noticed most teams with a long loosing streak or famine seem to have a โcurseโ on them. A curse only becomes dangerous if the players think there is one.
Went to a few cubs games when I spent 6 months in Chicago a few years back. As a Mayo fan I am delighted for them. There is hope although I hope we donโt have to wait 108 years.
Iโll be the wally to sayโฆthere wonโt be a cow milked in Chicago for a week!!!
