Sheppard's bye? Caulfield refuses to be drawn on attacker's links to Dundalk

Reports in Dundalk suggest that the Cork City star will switch allegiances for the 2018 season.

CORK CITY MANAGER John Caulfield has insisted that he wonโ€™t allow speculation linking one of his star players with a move to their main rivals to distract his side as they prepare for this weekendโ€™s FAI Cup final.

Sundayโ€™s game at the Aviva Stadium will see City bid to retain the cup and complete a double for the first time in the clubโ€™s history. Caulfieldโ€™s side lifted the Premier Division trophy following Friday nightโ€™s final league game against Bray Wanderers.

For the third season in a row, Dundalk will be their opponents in the FAI Cup decider. The game will mark the latest chapter in a fierce rivalry between the clubs, which began in 2014 when Dundalk won the first of three league titles at Cityโ€™s expense.

However, recent speculation linking Karl Sheppard with a move to Dundalk intensified yesterday when a report from Dundalk Sport claimed that the Cork City forward has agreed to move to Oriel Park next season.

Having moved to Leeside from Shamrock Rovers, Sheppard has spent the past three years with the newly-crowned champions. The 26-year-old, who was used as a right winger this season until Sean Maguireโ€™s departure for Preston North End in July, contributed nine league goals to Cityโ€™s victorious campaign.

Gearoid Morrissey, Conor McCormack and Jimmy Keohane have all signed new deals with John Caulfieldโ€™s side for next season, but Sheppard โ€” a native of Portmarnock in Dublin โ€” could now be set to move closer to home.

โ€œThis is cup final week,โ€ Caulfield said this afternoon. โ€œAll my energy and focus is on this game. Nothing will sidetrack me or the squad. Thereโ€™s talk about lots and lots of players and there has been for a long, long time. Conor McCormack was going somewhere else two weeks ago as well.

โ€œIโ€™m very focused on this week. Do I expect changes? Weโ€™ve said all along, of course there will be. We lost [Sean] Maguire and [Kevin] Oโ€™Connor two months ago, they need to be replaced. There is going to be an overhaul and there is going to be a bit of changing, but I still believe that the majority of our players will stay next year.โ€

When asked if he would take Sheppardโ€™s potential move to their FAI Cup final opponents into account when selecting his team for Sundayโ€™s game, Caulfield responded: โ€œI donโ€™t believe in all the speculation. I talk to my players every day. They know what Iโ€™m like, I know what theyโ€™re like.

โ€œAre there going to be players moving on? Of course there are, we accept, thatโ€™s part of it. But everyone is totally focused and tuned in. This is a massive game at the weekend. They know they can create history for themselves and as a group theyโ€™re very tight-knit. Thatโ€™s where all our energy is.

โ€œThereโ€™ll be lots of talk next week and the week after about players coming in and players going out. Thereโ€™s plenty of time for that.โ€

Following on from the news that Gearoid Morrissey, Conor McCormack and Jimmy Keohane will be part of Cork Cityโ€™s Premier Division title defence and Champions League campaign in 2018 โ€” along with Shane Griffin and Kieran Sadlier, who were already contracted โ€” Caulfield said further announcements regarding playing personnel are imminent.

โ€œWeโ€™re league champions. With the environment that we have here, the supporter base, our facilities, the coverage they get, youโ€™d be disappointed if players didnโ€™t want to stay at the club. They can see the work thatโ€™s going on behind the scenes and they can see the whole Cork City environment. Itโ€™s good and thereโ€™s more of that to come.โ€

Brilliant player. Contributed to many of Seaniโ€™s goals. Sorry to see him go.

Good grafter, but was never going to replace Seanie, not a natural goalscorer always gave his all but we need to up the quality now especially for champs league. Main thing is we donโ€™t lose the top guys(morrissey, bucks, McCormack, sadlier, bennett, mcnulty, mccarthy) Canโ€™t replace these, anyone else leaving can be replaced.Iโ€™d say johnny c has a few in mind as well

This lad had given us 3 great years of service, plays with 100% committment while wearing the City shirt and keeps team mates on their toes as he is always in their ear during gamesโ€ฆ.
Best of luck with his future career choices, lets hope he has a cup medal in his back pocket on Sunday evening!!!!

Heโ€™s never been a center forward , heโ€™s been wasted in there out of necessity .Played his best games out on the right when he had space created by Seanie but thereโ€™s no denying his quality or his selflessness and hard work for the cause .Anyone says otherwise is full of crap Even against Bray some of his passes and link play was a joy to watch

.I hope this is just the usual contract tactics but fear it may not be .Hard to replace his quality .
