Brian O'Driscoll on what went wrong and Ireland's 'two biggest injury losses'

The Ireland legend was not impressed by what he saw on Sunday afternoon.

BRIAN Oโ€™DRISCOLL CRITICISED Irelandโ€™s defence and cited Jared Payne and Jonny Sexton as Irelandโ€™s two big injury losses in the aftermath of Sundayโ€™s disappointing Rugby World Cup exit.

Speaking on Off the Ball, the Irish legend lamented the teamโ€™s inept defence as they were comprehensively beaten by Argentina.

โ€œIโ€™ve never seen Ireland defend as narrow as they did and the disappointing thing for me is that you could see it early on. We never actually fixed it throughout the whole game.

โ€œYouโ€™ve guys in there that donโ€™t know each other and werenโ€™t big communicators. For me, the two biggest losses were Jonny at 10 and possibly from a defensive point of view, Jared at 13, just being able to pull guys out to the width.

โ€œIโ€™m not shooting down (Keith) Earlsy. Heโ€™s played a lot out on the wing so heโ€™s not as up to speed as some people are at 13.โ€

Oโ€™Driscoll also criticised Irelandโ€™s tendency to get โ€œmismatched all over the placeโ€.

โ€œI saw Rory Best and Mike Ross on the edges โ€” that never happens. Youโ€™ve got to get your back rowers at worst or your centres to get one on either side, to make sure your wingers can play half in the backfield and youโ€™ve a little bit of gas on the outside. We had none of that.

โ€œIt was really frustrating watching it.โ€

As an almost three year dedicated gym rat this is absolutely brilliant advice that anyone considering going to the gym (or currently going) should take on board.
