Laws targets cup win for Kenny

Brian Laws wants to bring home some silverware in his first game with Shamrock Rovers, but says that all of the credit belongs to his predecessor.

BRIAN LAWS WANTS to take care of Stephen Kenny’s unfinished business when Shamrock Rovers host Drogheda United in Saturday’s EA Sports Cup final (kick-off 5.45pm).

Rovers’ league cup run was the highlight of an otherwise disappointing season for Kenny, who was sacked suddenly last week after less than nine months in the job.

On Monday the Hoops board appointed Laws to take charge of the first team until the end of the season while they continue their search for a permanent successor.

Rovers’ new director of football, who took training for the first time on Tuesday, said it was “bizarre” to have a shot at silverware in his first game in charge.

But if Rovers do prevail in Tallaght Stadium tomorrow night, Laws conceded that all credit for the win should go to his predecessor.

“I’m really sincerely disappointed for Stephen Kenny and how he’s lost his job, and particularly how I’ve picked up the reins and my next game is a cup final which is bizarre,” the former Burnley boss told TheScore.ie. “It’s unheard of.

“I feel for him because if I was in his shoes, I’d be gutted if I heard that I’m not going to be able to finish the job I’ve started.

“With due respect to him, we’ll finish off the job for him. For me, it would be his cup.”
