Blackburn terminate Irish winger O'Sullivan's contract by mutual agreement

The 23-year-old had been with the Ewood Park club since leaving Belvedere at the age of 15.

JOHN Oโ€™SULLIVANโ€™S EIGHT-YEAR association with Blackburn Rovers has come to an end after the winger and the Championship club mutually agreed to terminate his contract.

Oโ€™Sullivan, who joined Blackburn from Belvedere at the age of 15, made just six first-team appearances for the Ewood Park outfit.

The 23-year-old was sent out on loan to the likes of Barnsley, Rochdale and โ€” most recently โ€” Accrington Stanley, for whom he has played 25 times this season. Itโ€™s understood that Accrington are keen to sign Oโ€™Sullivan to a permanent deal now that he is free to join a new club.

โ€œThe club would like to thank John for his hard work and dedication during his time at Ewood Park and wishes him every success for his future career,โ€ Blackburn Rovers said in a statement.

Oโ€™Sullivan, who has represented the Republic of Ireland up as far as U21 level, thanked Blackburn in a message posted on Twitter.

He said: โ€œHaving been with Blackburn Rovers since Iโ€™m 15 years old and coming up through the academy with many ups and downs, at this stage of my career Iโ€™ve made the decision to leave the club by mutual consent.

โ€œI would just like to thank everyone at Blackburn for giving me the opportunity and a special thanks to all the staff in the background for your hard work throughout these years.

โ€œI wish the club all the best in the future.โ€

Player should respect fans. Fans pay to see football. Yes i know certain fans are bad. But not all. Itโ€™s the ugly side of sports i hate. Celebrate with your fans not bringing hate to others

@Simon Dwyer: You could forgive the player as his own fans had United jerseys on, he was confused.

@Ashling Fenton: Iโ€™ve been to Tallaght Stadium to watch Rovers, ROI U/21โ€™s, WNT, Dundalk during their European run & now Pats. Have to say, never once seen a fracas involving fans. Mad the different perceptions people have!

@david lydon: There was a bit of handbags between players at the end of a tense game. Hardly Irish soccer disgracing itself nowโ€ฆ
