NEW DUBLIN MANAGER Jim Gavin has revealed that the former world champion boxer Bernard Dunne has joined his backroom team.
The 32-year-old becomes the county’s new performance and lifestyle coach.
Gavin previously worked with Dunne at Under-21 level, though he has stressed that the former super-bantamweight star will have no influence on tactics or team selection.
Dunne’s role will involve helping players to realise their potential, according to Gavin, and the Clondalkin man was on hand to see the Dubs defeat the Evening Herald Dubs Stars 0-16 to 1-11 in Blanchardstown on New Year’s Day.
Meanwhile, Dublin begin their O’Byrne Cup campaign against Carlow next Sunday and Gavin told RTE he has no issue freeing up squad members to play for their college sides in pre-season competition.
He said: “The support systems operated by the colleges are great, particularly in the tough economic times we live in rgarding scholarships, having books and fees paid for and so on.
“Knowing the coaches in the universities and colleges, particularly in Dublin, I can testify to the amount of work being done in the promotion of gaelic games.
“I think it’s important that we support these coaches, so I’m quite happy to let players line out for their colleges in the O’Byrne Cup.”
Great article, short and sweet.
Pulling on my Puma Kings and kicking the hole off a kid in a pair of pink boots is one of the great pleasures of the sporting life.
Never throw out a pair of football boots, someday you’ll take them in your hands and remember what it was like to be young and not give a damn about anything more ninety minutes.
Puma Kings are the best. Always loved wearing them.
I wore Black adidas copa mundials as a kid, my dad got them for me as i was the only sports child. They were the best boots ever…if my old man saw me wearing anything but black boots he’d call me a Nancy boy.
I was about to reply that’s mine we’re Prada , then I noticed it was about football boots! Well I wore Gola back in the day when I played women’s soccer!! :-)
Sums up soccer very nicely indeed. Glad the proper football is back today. Earnestly hope it too doesn’t go the way of soccer.
