Athletic Bilbao down Atletico Madrid to reach Spanish Super Cup final

The come-from-behind win sets up a decider date with Real Madrid.

ATHLETIC BILBAO CAME back from a goal down to defeat La Liga champions Atletico Madrid 2-1 on Thursday and set up a Spanish Super Cup final against Real Madrid.

The Basque outfit, who won the Super Cup in 2021, trailed just after the hour mark when a header from Joao Felix crashed off the post before being deflected into the goal via the back of keeper Unai Simon.

However, the match swung Bilbaoโ€™s way inside four minutes late in the second half with both their goals also coming from set-pieces.

A 77th-minute header from Yeray Alvarez levelled the scores before Nico Williams hit the winner nine minutes from time, finding the net from a corner by captain Iker Munian.

The teenage Williams beat Renan Lodi and Atletico skipper Koke to the ball to head past Jan Oblak in goal.

โ€œIโ€™m very emotional right now,โ€ said 19-year-old Nico Williams who lined up for the match alongside older brother Inaki.

โ€œI hope there will be many more joys like this. Iโ€™m very happy to have been able to experience this with my Inaki and my mother, who came to hug us at the end of the match.

โ€œShe told me I deserved it. The hug with my brother after my goal is a moment I will never forget.โ€

Oblak admitted his team had been stunned by the defeat.

โ€œItโ€™s hard to explain, we conceded two goals off set-pieces. We have conceded a lot of goals like that this season, and it happened to us again tonight,โ€ said the Slovenian international.

โ€œWe have to find the answer to this problem otherwise it will be very complicated until the end of the season.โ€

Real Madrid made sure of their place in Sundayโ€™s final in Riyadh with a 3-2 win over Barcelona on Wednesday.

@Ollie Fitzpatrick: lowe and Dan are part of the 6 nations squad but connors is nowhere near that squad. Hodnet, timoney, pendergast are all way ahead of him. Not to mention with conan going to 8 we have doris who can play 7 as can POM. Infact Iโ€™d rather see Scott penny get time for leinster than will.

Hope they donโ€™t rush Sheehan back this Saturday. 50 mins against the Stormers on the 25th of Jan and then into the 6 nations squad. Connors now needs to stay fit for the rest of the season if he wants to ever make an Ireland squad, at nearly 29 time is running out

Lowe is too slow. Osborne a better long term bet.

@conor carroll: Osbourne isnโ€™t a wing, he can do the job but heโ€™s a 12 or 15. Lowe being โ€œslowโ€ didnโ€™t stop him being named in the world XV this year or being one of our best performing players.

@conor carroll: not on the wing he isnt, hes not a winger and it showed on sunday, great 12 and 15,lowe though offers far more on the left wing, breaks tackles, carries, big left boot and has vastly improved his defence, also always goes hunting for the ball and gets stuck in to mauls and excellent under the high ball, pace is not everything.

@conor carroll: Interesting statement. If you actually watched rugby youโ€™d see that Lowe is probably quicker than Osborne in a foot race. Osborne has many, many strengths. Pace isnโ€™t one of them.

Honestly, is Lowe still a starter for Leinster? I just really canโ€™t see how you leave out Jamie Osborne even if he was rusty on the wing at the weekend, like his skill level for that try was ridiculous. He also has just a big left boot as Lowe.

@Eoin H: Osborne isnโ€™t a winger and should only be playing there in a pinch. Lowe is also the better player generally right now

@Eoin H: Well he has been a starter for the last 7.5 years. And he was a starter right up until his injury. Osborne is far far better utilised at 12 or 15. Letโ€™s just play lads in their correct positions.

@Eoin H: I partially agree with you. Osbourne has an ability to hold on to passes that others would knock on and is too good to leave out of the team. Lowe is a try scoring machine as well though so not sure Iโ€™d leave him out either. Iโ€™d probably play Osbourne at 12 and leave Henshaw on the bench for impact
