Anelka walks out of West Brom but club say he's on 'compassionate leave'

Rumours were rife this afternoon that the Frenchman had decided to call time on his career in football.

NICOLAS ANELKAโ€™S FUTURE at West Brom is unclear after reports emerged this afternoon that he had retired.

Sky Sports were claiming that the French striker, who joined the Baggies just 49 days ago, had walked out of training this afternoon having told members of staff that he was retiring from football.

However, West Brom have since released a statement revealing that he has been permission to leave on compassionate grounds and will miss this weekendโ€™s Premier League game against Everton.

โ€œWest Bromwich Albion can confirm that Nicolas Anelka will not be involved in Saturdayโ€™s game at Everton,โ€ the statement reads.

โ€œThe club have excused the striker from club duty on compassionate grounds.โ€

It is believed that the one of the playerโ€™s agents may have died but Anelkaโ€™s future at West Brom remains uncertain.
