PERFECTLY STOKING THE flames ahead of his sidesโ clash later today, West Ham striker Andy Carroll has hit out at the way he was treated by Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers in his final few months at Anfield.
In a hard-hitting interview with The Times, the 26 year-old describes the summer of 2012 and how Rodgersโ poor man-management ensured Carroll โlost respect for himโ.
โWhat he was saying to me and what was actually happening (were different things). He would say: โYouโre going to play every week, youโre going to play every game up front with (Luis) Suarez. Iโd leave and get back home and he would ring me and say: โFulham and West Ham want you and I think itโs best you should goโ.โ
It was mixed messages. He was messing with my head. I lost respect for him, to be honest.โ
Carrollโs spell on Merseyside officially lasted from January 2011 until the summer of 2013 but he had known that his time was over at Liverpool for quite a while.
The turning point came when the club headed to Scotland for a Europa League qualifier against Hearts in late-August 2012.
โHe (Rodgers) said I was starting. I woke up in the morning and he came in and said: โI think youโve got a hamstring problem, youโre not going to start.โ I said my hamstring was fine. He said Iโd be on the bench. I got to the ground and I wasnโt even on the bench. I was the only one missing out. โIt was just messing me about. I was angry. I knew it was time to go. โ
Having spent the entire 2012/2013 campaign on loan at West Ham, he made a permanent switch at the end of that season and has managed 14 goals in 45 league starts for the Hammers โ five of those coming in his last eight games.
A tad disappointed to see Eddie take the Cuala job. Itโs a bit of a handy number really. I can understand his frustrations in Laois but this feels like a cop out. What he wouldnโt bring to a Carlow, Westmeath, Meath etc. It also saddens me to think that Cuala have the big bucks to throw at the big names and Eddie has probably been tempted by the โฌs.
@Johnny B: Tempted by โฌs? Is that such a bad thing? If he had taken over a county team with a few bob there would be purists implying heโs a mercenary too. Heโs endured a tough time coping with the structures in Laois. Canโt blame him for joining a well run club with good players where he will probably do more for his reputation that spinning his wheels at a Carlie, Westmeath, Meath etc.
@Johnny B: Iโm sure there is a bigger picture to look at here. Surely just a stepping stone into the Dublin hurling manager.
@EnKy: I donโt blame him either. Think heโs a real genuine hurling man. Itโs just his attributes would be a real asset to a developing county. But youโre probably right = straight into the Dubs from here.
Would like to have seen Eddie in the Clare job. See how far he could actually bring them.
@Billy: would you not give Lohan a chance and try get the players missing this year back into the squad?
Best of luck to them,John was a fablous hurler ,thats some managment set up for a Club.
@Gerry Campbell: What about Ballaghaderreen baby?
