SEVEN PLAYERS FROM All-Ireland champions Tipperary and four from beaten finalists Kilkenny have been honoured in the 2016 GAA-GPA All-Star hurling team.
There are two winners apiece from beaten All-Ireland semi-finalists in Galway and Waterford.
Kingpins Tipperary have winners in Cathal Barrett, James Barry, Ronan, Padraic and Patrick Maher, Seamus Callanan and John McGrath.
Kilkennyโs recipients are Eoin Murphy, Padraig Walsh, Walter Walsh and Richie Hogan.
Daithi and David Burke are honoured from Galway while Jamie Barron and Austin Gleeson are the successful players from Waterford.
There are nine first-time winners in Murphy, Barrett, Barry, Padraig Walsh, Ronan Maher, Barron, Walter Walsh, Gleeson and John McGrath.
Padraic Maher and Richie Hogan both collect their fourth All-Star while itโs a third award for Seamus Callanan and David Burke. Patrick Maher and Daithi Burke both previously won one award.
There are four players from last yearโs team again honoured in Hogan, Callanan and the Burke duo from Galway. Indeed it is the third successive year that sharphshooters Hogan and Callanan have claimed awards.
Ronan and Padraic Maher are the first Tipperary brothers to win All-Stars in the same year since Paul and Eoin Kelly achieved that feat in 2002.
Padraig Walsh follows in the footsteps of his older brother Tommy who won nine awards during his Kilkenny career, while John McGrathโs older brother is a two-time recipient.

Terrible decision,Seamie Callananโs all day long,Gleeson cleaned out of it in the Munster final and some man to drive a ball wide !! Joke
Absolute joke of a decision. Look over his face against Wexford, any other player would have been dropped for such a performer. Blew hot and cold all year, farcical decision!
*performance
Austin Gleeson is an excellent hurler but how can you give player of the year to a player that hit 9 wides against Wexford, got hammered by Tipp in the Munster final and beaten by Kilkenny in the All Ireland Semi where he was taken off.Seamus Callanan goes and scores 13 points (9points from play) in the all ireland final and still doesnโt get it???
He was man of the match twice in the two Kilkenny games. Sky got it right.
Niall you are delusional. He was taken off in the munster final (had a nightmare) and did nothing against galway.
Tipp are the first team from Munster in 11 years to go unbeaten in the championship and they only get 7 out of 15, a joke! Like, no rep in midfield whatsoever and only 3 forwards and yet they destroy Waterford in Munster final and Kilkenny in all Ireland final?!
Donal Waterford had complete systems failure in the Munster final. Gleeson has been exceptional all year. Running lengths of field taking on an entire Kilkenny side. Played centre back and half forward, fielded the ball incredibly and put on a skilful show. Delighted they gave it to him.
Delighted for James Barry from Upperchurch Drombane
Seamie callanan had to get hoty, Conor Fogarty robbed 2nd year in a row midfield
Callanan was average all year apart from the all Ireland final. Gleeson done it all with a young side all around him.
Sunday game vote for Hurler of the year was as follows;
Cyrill Farrell- Seamus Callanan
Eddie Brennan- Seamus Callanan
Brendan Cummins- Seamus Callanan
Liam Sheedy- Seamus Callanan
Henry Shefflin- Padraic Maher
Ger Loughnane- Padraic Maher
Michael Duignan- John McGrath
Austin Gleeson wasnโt nominated by any of them
I think John โBubblesโ O Dwyer should have been included.. despite the red card during the year. Lad has some skill the scores he took through out the yearโฆ
Heโs an undesirable
Like yourself
Stephen fully agree with you Dwyer has more talent than the entire Galway panel but if you get red cardeded you are out of the running
Bill, if red card put him out of contention fair enough, heโs still a class act. Seamie should have got Hurler of the year, two great seasons back to backโฆ.Austin Glesson amazing talent but makes very poor decisions at times.. wrong decision in my opinion
Stephen my pick for Player of the Year either Callinan or Padraig Maher next Ronan Maher and or John McGrath and an โalso ranโ Austin Gleeson way down the field
Walter Walshโฆโฆโฆ. ah stop!!!!
Well done Austin , well deserved . many more to come !
Callinan should have won it!
Waaaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaa
Well done niall, showing your true loyalties there in your profile pic. Would have thought youโd have a Dynamo Kiev crest there by now?
Once a red , always a red ! #YNWA
A toss up between Seamus Callinan or Padraig Maher for Player of the year with John McGrath next, flashes of genius from Austin Gleeson but one swallow donโt make a Summer
No but pretty sure player of the league campaign and two man of the match performances against Kilkenny puts you up there.
Padraic O Mahoney got rte man of the match in the 2nd Kilkenny game where he scored 14 points and Tadgh De Burca was better than Gleeson that day aswell. Also Gleeson was muck against Wexford and taken off against Tipp in the MUNSTER final.
James you are the only one that seems to agree with this decision and by the look on his face I would include Austin Gleeson in that group also .. fantastic hurler but both Paudi maher and callanan deserved it ahead of him.. I wonder did the two tipp lads split the vote? Anyway I am sure the Celtic crosses will comfort the tipp lads tonight.
Its player of the year , not player of the championship. Gleeson had a savage league run aswell.
Great point Fintin
Do national league winners not usually get one place? I know Clare had a poor championship but winning the league should be considered better that losing All Ireland semi finals like Waterford and Galway. As you said, players are chosen over whole years performance, not just championship.
Youโve spouted the same shite right down this thread with little meat on your argument and obviously got the blue and white blinkers on. Should KK have won the AI this year, there is no way AG would have been awarded the hurler of the year. You claim all year, he was great, well the facts are he wasnโt. A brilliant young hurler yes but got his fair share of criticism for trying to beat teams on his own. Should have been red carded in Munster 21 final and pathetic in Munster senior. I was at that game and he looked lost and totally outclassed. Padraig Maher has been immense all year with no drops in performance. So by your logic, there was no better player in the championship this year. Waterford and Clare had hurling fans all over disgusted at the defensive approach they brought to the earlier games, but yet when exposed against Tipp, then the change came. Austin Gleeson performed well in a team that played this system until the last two games and saying he had a great league campaign, well for the bigger counties like Tipp and Kilkenny thatโs just trials for new players. In absolutely no facet should AG have been awarded this and it was even pretty 50/50 with Ronan Maher for the young player. Youโre very much in the minority here.
Players voted for players of the year senior and young . There in a better position to judge than any journalist or commentator. End of argument.
Callanan scored 2-47 in the championship, he was robbed.
He was not robbed. By that logic no back would ever win it.
Itโs player of the year, not championship. Tipp and callinan were poor in the league. Itโs as simple as that.
Out of 7 panelists on the Sunday game Austin Gleeson didnโt get the vote off any of them, Callanan got 4 votes.Look at any newspaper or online articles today and they all say the same that Callanan was hotly topped to win player of the year and it was the same after the All Ireland Final. They all said Callanan will get player of the year.
Eddie Brennan- Callanan
Cyril Farrell- Callanan
Brendan Cummins- Callanan
Liam Sheedy- Callanan
ROBBED!!!!!!!
Disgrace what a load of shite!!right up there with when Brian Whelahan was overlooked for n all star
Callahan should 100% have gotten hurler of the year, no doubt! Pure joke!
Who gives a shite about thisโฆ.SICK of media making them out to be Brain Surgeons
If you think the media are trying to make them out as brain surgeons maybe you need to see one.
Paudraic Maher,by a country mile,Callanan second choice. Now if you are talking about most promising player/team it probably is Waterford.
