Kevin OโBrien reports from Croke Park
THE ALL-IRELAND finals in both football and hurling are moving from September to August on a temporary basis for the next three years.
Motion 5 passed with an overwhelming majority, meaning the All-Ireland finals in both codes will be played before the last Sunday in August on dates to be determined by Central Council.
For the first time since 1903, the All-Ireland finals will be held in August. Likely dates for the deciders next year:
- All-Ireland SHC final - August 13, 2018
- All-Ireland SFC final - August 27, 2018
It is hoped it will free up more time in the GAA calendar for the playing of club matches.
The motion passed by a margin of 78%-22%.
Motion 6 has also been passed which means replays in all inter-county championship matches will be done away with, apart from senior All-Ireland finals and provincial finals. Extra-time is now obligatory in all other cases.
The motion passed by a margin of 91%-9% and also comes in on a three-year trial.

This is class. At long last the GAA seems to be progressing.
Cork the only county to go against the last few motions?
Nice to see them try to tidy up the delays with replays but I think the extra time might only benefit those teams who are better conditioned.
Exactly. You should be rewarded if you are in better condition. Conditioning is achieved by hard work & discipline. No single team has a natural advantage in this area.
Not necessarily true Pat. Sure the foundations are in the hard work and discipline but not every team have the facilities and staff to be as well conditioned as other teams. Having said that, Iโm delighted the replays are more or less gone.
All you need to be well conditioned is a gym, a place to run, a good diet & be disciplined. Thereโs actually nothing else you need. Every inter county player in the country has access to a gym, whether it be Kilkenny footballers or hurlers. Fair enough they may have personal trainers & diet plans with the better funded counties but thatโs all accessible online anyway. If youโre motivated enough there should be no difference. In my opinion!
Yeah but everyone outside Dublin prefer to see it like Rocky IV.
it wonโt be long now before we have a semi professional inter county scene, with the Clubs playing with out their inter county players
this is actually the start of a setup to try prevent that Michael
Which is a good thing, the only thing that will benefit the club player is separation of County
Possibly go similar to rugby, players will be contracted to their county teams until they get knocked out of the championship? Itโs a shame the club players are sitting on their hands during the best weather and playing matches in the frost and rainโฆ
Itโll reek havoc with u12 fixtures.
Great gives rugby and soccer even more time in the spotlight with no gaa in septโฆ.gaa forget that the intercounty game is also there to promote the profile of the game at all levelsโฆless time in the spotlight means kids will be watchin it less and watchin more rugby and premiership etc
Probably Mossy, but only until the Rugby injuries at school level are exposed. Some effort being put in keeping that one on low..so far!
Kids are better off watching rugby and soccer better organise . Less trouble in rugby and soccer
1) bring in a league for the summer where county players are not allowed play.
2) For extra time either sending off still count and you remain down the sent off player or itโs a new game and all yellows cards are forgotten about. As it is at the moment. Team with player sent off are able to replace him but yellow cards still stand.
how can it as Club players now wont be able to play any championship games between May and August are the CPA going to wear that.
the way the club scene will work Iโd imagine is 2 sections. April may and then August to october/November. there might be no club games throughout summer or none of importance. they might run a league where non intercounty club players play
Is that This summer 2017 or starting next year?
Next year
