CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP-winning owner Alan Potts has passed away at the age of 80.
His wife Ann, died in August after a long illness.
Potts was regarded as one of the leading owners in Ireland and Britain, and his horse Sizing John โ trained by Jessica Harrington โ won the Gold Cup this March.
Harrington also trained Pottsโ horse Supasundae, who won the Coral Cup at the latest Cheltenham Festival.
Alan and Ann Potts enjoyed a successful 2016-17 campaign, as Fox Norton, Sizing Codelco and Pingshou were all scorers at the Grand National meeting at Aintree in April.
โItโs a big shock,โ Harrington told Press Association Sport yesterday. โIt wasnโt something we were expecting. I found out through an email from his company this morning.
โHe was a certain age but heโd just been away on holiday to Mauritius and Africa and come back. Iโd talked to him a couple of times and he seemed to be in great form.
โFor him to die so soon after his wife โ itโs sad.
โIโve only trained for him for just over a year but weโve been incredibly lucky together. It was a fantastic year.โ

Come on Rovers!!!!
Letโs go, Rovers!
Wtf? Why are we seeing queenโs funeral plans on here? Spare us please. Sheโs not our queen.
@James Finlay: WTF what? This is about Shamrock Rovers not the Queen. Go back to reading about the Queen if you want to make daft comments. Well done Rovers
@Mick Hyland: you obviously werenโt following the match on here, where the commentary was interrupted to share news about plans for the queenโs funeral. So thanks for making my point for me. I had no interest as I wanted to read about Rovers. Gombeen.
@James Finlay: No I was watching it on TV.
