CHELSEA FOOTBALL club owner Roman Abramovich said on Wednesday he had accepted an apology and rewrites after suing the author and publisher of a book about Russian President Vladimir Putinโs inner circle.
Abramovich sued publisher HarperCollins and investigative journalist Catherine Belton in the High Court over passages about the Russian billionaireโs acquisition of the English club and business dealings in Russia in her bestselling book โPutinโs Peopleโ.
Chelsea released a statement from Abramovichโs spokesperson saying: โWe are pleased that HarperCollins and the author have apologised to Mr Abramovich and agreed to amend the book, removing several false claims about him.โ
A High Court judge in November had ruled that claims in the book were defamatory against Abramovich, opening up the possibility of a full libel trial, which The Guardian reported could have cost some ยฃ10 million.
A group of oligarchs and Russian oil giant Rosneft had launched libel action, but two other oligarchs agreed to small changes, while a High Court judge ruled that only one passage concerning Rosneft was defamatory.
The libel action prompted rights groups including Reporters Without Borders to criticise the use of lawsuits to silence critical reporting.
Belton, a former Financial Times journalist in Moscow who now works for Reuters, said in a statement she was โgladโ to have reached a settlement.
She said she had been โbombarded from all sides by lawsuitsโ in what felt like a โwar of attritionโ.
Chelsea said the case had been misreported and it was mounting โa well-founded legal claimโ that was not seeking to be punitive. It said it had asked HarperCollins to make a charitable donation in lieu of damages.
HarperCollins said it โhas now amended the book to record the position more accurately, and include additional comments from Mr Abramovichโs spokespersonโ.
It stressed, however, that none of the claims have resulted in damages and praised Beltonโs โknowledge, tenacity and braveryโ.
Chelsea said the rewritten passages amounted to 1,700 words including โfalse statementsโ about Abramovichโs purchase of Chelsea Football Club.
The book included claims by former Putin associate Sergei Pugachev that it was on Putinโs instigation in a bid to increase Russiaโs influence.
Harper Collins said it had now made clear โthere is no evidence, beyond the statements of the individuals themselves, supporting claims made to the author by Sergei Pugachev and two other unnamed individuals about the purchase of Chelsea Football Clubโ.
Firmino should be in the team of the year never mind alternative team. Been brilliant for Liverpool and Iโm by no means a Liverpool fan
@Mel Roberts: Definilty, heโs been fantastic.
Lascelles from Newcastle has been outstanding all season. Would have him in at the back. As has Mee from Burnley.
@David OfBrien: They should do an Alternative Alternative Team of the Season.
@Alan J. McKenna: or maybe look outside of the top 6 clubs for a change. Tarkowski and vardy are the only players selected from clubs outside of the top 6.
@David OfBrien: The best players tend to come from the clubs that, you know, perform the best in the season. And you tend to find those at the top of the table. Sorry if that sounds radical.
@Alan J. McKenna: Not radical, just not very intelligent or well thought out.
Many players have performed outstandingly over the season with teams not at the top level, making their performances even better, compared with the likes of Otamemdi for example.
The top teams might have the best players, but itโs a competition for the players whoโve played the best over the season, and those should be considered.
Nice try though.
@James SonofLochlann: took the words right out of my mouth.
Andy Robertson every day of the week, most improved player and what a bargain!
Valencia in for azpilicueta without any question !
Even though Chelsea had a poor season Kante is better than Matic
No Andy Robertson, Again. Underrated obviously.
Ederson? And your reasoning being nothing to do with conventional goalkeeping.
Easy to look good in terms of clean sheets and goals conceded when your team averages like 75% possession and you face barely any shots. De Gea or Pope have clearly been the best in the league.
@Brian: Pope is great with crosses, in fairnessโฆ
Lascelles over Sanchez, bit of a donkey if Iโm honest. Not very reassuring at the back.
Agree with the team overall but feel like Kante or Shane Duffy are also some good shouts
