JUST A 40-minute drive from the famous Las Vegas Strip, the Colorado River carves its way through the Grand Canyon.

Evolution Expeditions is one of several local operations offering kayak tours that start from just below the gigantic Hoover Dam before paddling downstream.

All-day kayaking tours start at $165.

2. Golfing at Angel Park

If you prefer dry land, then Angel Park Golf Club is probably the one for you.

Designed by Arnold Palmer, there are a number of courses to choose from and there’s even the option of playing at night time on the floodlit Cloud Nine course.

Clubs are available to rent but it’s recommended you book tee-times in advance from about $30.

3. Cycling around Red Rock Canyon

There are any number of cycling routes around Red Rock Canyon and you can find most of them here.

The cost of bike hire varies but can usually be arranged with your hotel.

The Las Vegas Cyclery also provides tours which include bus rides to and from the canyon as well as other cycle routes. Prices start at about $130.

4. Climbing Red Rock Canyon

Red Rock Canyon is also widely considered as one of the finest rock climbing areas in the world so if you don’t fancy cycling up there, you could always get your climbing gear out.

This is obviously something that only experienced climbers should attempt and the US Department of the Interior — who look after the nature reserve the canyon is situated in — will supply guided climbs and can also provide camping passes to those looking to stay the night.

5. Drive the Las vegas Motor Speedway

You can drive the Las Vegas Motor Speedway yourself, or you can experience what it feels like to be lashed around in a NASCAR at the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

This looks like a lot of fun, but it can get quite expensive if you go for some of the deluxe packages.

6. Take part in the Poc Fada on the Strip

At nearly 7km in length, the Las Vegas strip may be a little long to start your own version of the Cooley Cup but it might still be something worth trying at night time.

You’ll probably be arrested for jay walking and/or possessing a deadly weapon mind.
