SAM MAGUIRE IS on offer for the winners on Sunday at Croke Park but that’s not the only prize the Dublin and Mayo players are in the running for.
With just one game – barring a draw – left in the 2017 All-Ireland senior football championship, the decider will have a big bearing on who emerges from the leading contenders to win the individual award.

How is cluxton even in the running
@John: Quite apart from his shot stopping, try observing him in a match and you might actually see why, particularly his pin point distribution and how many of the Dublin scores start from him. Then observe other goalkeepers at your next few matches and it’ll eventually make sense.
Put it this way if Stephen Cluxton played for Nayo they would have won at least 2 all-Ireland’s in the last few years.
@John: come out of your cave and watch Sunday
@Martin Fahy: I love the stats like…hits his man with 82% of his kick outs. But sure a lot of them are to an unmarked corner back 20 mtrs from him…now that’s accurate!
Higgins outstanding all year.
@Padraig Corcoran: me. Im great vote for me,
Colm Boyle for jaysus sake!!
Colm Boyle should surely get a mention. Otherwise Moran gets the nod.
Diarmuid Connolly for me.
Diarmuid Connolly
Don’t care who gets it once Dublin win on Sunday
Andy Moran wouldn’t get near a place in the Dublin team, maybe not even the bench. But if he plays well and Mayo win- then couldn’t begrudge him. Not stirring- just a view!
If Cluxton gets it it’ll be like Ryan Giggs all over again.
Boyle and Higgins have been Mayo’s best performers this year.
Andy moran has had 3 good games this year. But if they win sunday then he deserves it . If con has a big game sunday he could also get it. Cluxtons been unreal this year . His kickouts are on another level
Moran my arse been around for the last 2 to 3 games. Cluxton deserves it
@Ollie Watson: football is in a sad state of affairs if a goalkeeper is getting footballer of the year
@Ollie Watson: Andy’s scored in every game this year, scoring 3-21 from play, he’s hands down player of the year.
@Goose Gosling: He’s only scored so much because Mayo came through back door and had matches go to extra time and replays.
@Brian O’Loughlin: if it was a Dublin player im sure you wouldn’t be too worried
@Goose Gosling: That’s only averaging just over 3 points a game over 9 games. Hardly shooting the lights out. His two games v Kerry were excellent and why he’s rightly in pole position.
@Brian O’Loughlin: he was taken off in those games so I don’t know what relevance going to extra time has. Yes he scored in the replays but that only adds to his chances of getting player of the year. What has he scored in the quarters and semis, around 3-10 I’d say?
Not saying this won’t change on Sunday but as things stand he’s undoubtedly been player of the year
@Eoin Ó Conaill: all of dublins mastermind attacks and plays are made by one man and one man only Stepho
Higgins from mayo been Mayo’s best player , by far Moran’s best year for mayo. My vote goes to Paul mannion free scoring from play in every game bar Tyrone where his tacking ,movement, passing tracking back was outstanding.
A pity Mayo player like last year
On the Mayo side, Adien Higgins has been outstanding again this yr he is probably one of, if not the best corner back in the country over the last ten or so years, and of course Andy Moran has been very good.On the Dublin side Cluxton has had a great year but Ciaran Kilkenny has been super and probably shades it for me if Dublin win on Sunday. For the young player of the year Cian o Callaghan looks a dead cert with Corks Sean Powter and Kildares Kevin Feely worthy of a mention.
