Here's how The42 got on when we challenged David Gillick to a breakfast cook-off

Tasty.

Kelly v Gillick: the lads went head-to-head in the kitchen.

IRISH OLYMPIAN AND national 400m record holder David Gillick has brought out a new cookbook.

So we did what any self-respecting sports website would do and challenged the former Celebrity MasterChef champion to a cook-off.

The42โ€˜s deputy editor Niall Kelly bravely stepped up to the plate under the assumption that boxing rules applied and, if he won, he would be crowned the new Celebrity MasterChef champion. Unfortunately thatโ€™s not how it works.

As the challenger Niall got to choose both the location (Whitefriar Grill on Aungier Street) and the recipe (the all-in-one breakfast from Davidโ€™s book).

With such an advantage, he couldnโ€™t fail. Could he?

Gentlemen, start your hobs:

Superb knifework from the boy Kelly โ€” but would it be enough to carry the day?

You can watch the video in full here as we also chatted to David about the importance of proper nutrition for athletes and non-athletes alike.

And if youโ€™re desperate to know the result of the cook-off, SPOILER ALERT: the lads called it a draw and David retains his MasterChef title.

Remember reading about his eye trouble a few years ago, hope he makes a quick recovery.
