Ireland could be without their first choice right-back for Euro qualifier with Germany

Everton defender Seamus Coleman is an injury doubt for Sunday’s Merseyside derby.

SEAMUS COLEMAN HAS emerged as an injury doubt for Ireland’s Euro 2016 qualifier against world champions Germany next week.

The Everton full-back sat out the Toffees’ last two Premier League matches, a draw with Swansea and Monday’s win over West Brom, as he is recovering from a hamstring injury picked up against Chelsea last month.

26-year-old Coleman was expected to return for this Sunday’s Merseyside derby with neighbours Liverpool, but manager Roberto Martinez told the media this morning that he won’t make a decision on the Donegal man or team-mate John Stones until matchday.

“It’s too early to tell,” Martinez said, when asked about the pair’s fitness. “They are progressing well and in the next two sessions we will get a clear idea. I wouldn’t be able to tell you one way or another.

We will make a decision as late as we can. We’re probably going to leave it until the day of the game.”

It is bound to be a worry for Ireland boss Martin O’Neill as he plans for the visit of Germany to the Aviva Stadium on Thursday night before they take on Poland in Warsaw next Sunday.

We are in for a rough ride anyway, with or without Coleman.

Would prefer him back for the Poland game if he had to miss the Germany game I’d say Christie would slip in

Oddly understated headline for the42. You could have ran something like “Ireland could be missing BEST PLAYER for CAMPAIGN DEFINING Euro Qualifier with Germany.”

But it might as well say “Ireland could beat Germany without their best player.” Or “Stephen Ireland could return to Ireland squad”. Possibilities, no matter how likely OR remote, make poor headlines.

Put Ireland next to McCarthy and we look a different side, both intelligent players and would get the best out if each other
