Croke Park chiefs' plan to scrap U21 championship

And there’ll be a lot less replays in the championship, if proposals are passed.

THE GAA ARE planning to scrap the intercounty U21 competitions and replace them with an U20 grade.

The organisation’s Central Council released details of their proposals today, which will go before Congress next month in Carlow.

The move will help with the issue of player burnout, they hope.

If passed — needing a two-thirds majority, as always — the new U20 competition will be played midweek during June and July, with a winner found on the night.

A game that is tied after normal time will go to extra time and then, if necessary, sudden death free kicks.

The Association also propose that replays only be played if teams can’t be separated in provincial or All-Ireland finals.
