PARIS-ROUBAIX IS one of cycling’s most notorious one-day classics, requiring riders to navigate stretches of treacherous cobblestones at high speeds.

But it wasn’t the cobbles that proved to Yoann Offredo’s undoing yesterday. It was a street sign.

The French rider took his eyes off the road for a split-second and paid the price, crashing into the sign and flipping over the handlebars.

Unsurprisingly Offredo didn’t finish the race, won for a third time by Switzerland’s Fabian Cancellara.

Thanks to Johnny Nyhan for the tip.
