3 Irishmen pack their bags for Wembley as Yeovil stun Blades

Sam Foley, Kevin Dawson and Paddy Madden all started in The Glovers’ 2-0 win over Sheffield United.

IRISH MIDFIELDER KEVIN DAWSON got the playoff party started at Huish Park this afternoon as Yeovil advanced to a date with destiny in Wembley.

Dawson scored after six minutes to level The Glovers’ League One playoff semi-final with Sheffield United on aggregate. It was only the third goal of Dawson’s professional career. The Blades were not going to give up without a fight and saw a Jamie Murphy effort thunder off the Yeovil bar.

United, who lost the League One playoff final on penalties to Huddersfield last season, also went close through Michael Doyle and Callum McFadzean. Ultimately, however, Yeovil claimed the second goal to make it 2-0 on the day and 2-1 on aggregate.

With five minutes to go, Irish forward Paddy Madden whipped in a cross for Ed Upson to head home. The home supporters edged along the touchline in the closing stages and were forced to endure five bervy minutes of extra time before the swarmed onto the pitch.

Speaking to the BBC after the dramatic win, Dawson commented, “This means everything to the club. I can’t explain what I’m feeling. It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had in my life, unreal. We’re now 90 minutes away from the Championship and that’s where we want to be. I’ve never been to Wembley, so I can’t wait.”

He added, “I knew if I made the run Ed Upson would find me. I’m delighted it went in. We didn’t want extra time. I was in total shock when Ed’s goal went in.”

Sheffield United captain Michael Doyle was the one Irishman at Huish Park with a look of dejection as the Yeovil fans jigged and whooped by.
