Spanish great Xavi announces his retirement from international football

The 34-year-old is the most decorated player in Spanish football history.

BARCELONA’S XAVI HERNANDEZ has retired from international football, it has been confirmed.

The 34-year-old made the announcement today after a disappointing World Cup performance that saw Spain exit the competition at the group stages.

“I have decided to leave the national team. I think my time there has finished,” he told a news conference.

Xavi ends his time in the international set-up as the most successful player in Spanish footballing history, playing a role in each of his country’s historic three consecutive major tournament wins, in addition to acquiring 24 titles in total.
