CAROLINE WOZNIACKI EXPECTS to be fit for the beginning of the Australian Open after her Grand Slam dreams were temporarily put on ice by a wrist injury.
The world number one had her left wrist strapped during yesterday’s quarter-final defeat to Agnieszka Radwanska at the Sydney International and there were fears that she might miss the season’s first Grand Slam, which begins in Melbourne on Monday.
An MRI scan on the injury this morning revealed nothing more sinister than some inflammation and Wozniacki is expected to recover in time to play, a WTA spokesperson told AFP.
“Caroline had a MRI scan this morning and it proved clear,” a WTA spokesperson said. ”It is inflamed and she has been told to ice the wrist and rest it and she expects to play in the Australian Open.”

Wozniacki, who is the top seed in tomorrow’s draw for the women’s singles, will start next week as world number one after Petra Kvitova failed in her efforts to end the Dane’s 65-week run at the top of the rankings.
Kvitova could have leapfrogged Wozniacki into top spot with a win in Sydney this week but the Czech second seed was beaten in three sets this morning by Li Na of China.
